San Diego and Balboa Park

Online, I see tickets can be bought in combination for the zoo and Balboa Park. I think the tickets for Balboa Park are for the museums only - is that true? Can a person walk through the park without paying admission? Please explain.

Subject should read: San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park.

Balboa Park itself is FREE (as is parking.) So, yes, you can walk around and enjoy the gardens, pavilion, eat, sit, etc. It's the museums that have an entrance fee. The Zoo and the Park connect.

Hi and welcome,

Answering your last question first: Yes, there is no admission fee to the park itself (and parking at the various lots within the park is also free).

There are several variations of park passes:

Passport to Balboa Park - Gets you into the 14 museums over a 7 day period for one price.

Passport / Zoo Combo - Gets you into the 14 museums over 7 days and a one-day admission to the Zoo for one price.

Stay for the Day - Gets you into 5 of the 14 museums for one price (you pick the museums).

Here are the details:

Enjoy!

There is one more "segment" of Balboa Park, and that is the Old Globe area, which is well known for its offering of plays and stage shows.

And yes, admission is charged, so would be an extra expense.

We received brochures, maps, etc. from AMA today (AAA in the USA) that are full of information which I'm going to look and read through and make notes.

Thanks again for info.

On the weekends there are lots of street entertainers . There are also free organ concerts and on Sundays the international cottages are open which are also free. Each cottage represents a different country and they have food available for purchase. In season they also have outdoor entertainment.

The Spanish Village area of the park(on the way to the zoo) has many interesting shops and demonstrations of artisans at work.

Of course since the Old Globe(mentioned above) is a theater it would require a ticket to see a play/show there!
