Hotel Circle

I have been reading posts that suggest not staying on hotel circle. I am wondering why? I will be in SD without a car for 3 days. I want to sightsee using the "hop on hop off" trolley. Those hotels seem convenient for that. Would you suggest other hotels in the Old Town area that would be within a very short walk to the place where the trolleys begin??? I am really in a quandry. Thanks for your help...I sure appreciate it.

I guess the area is fine if you don't need to be able to do things right outside of your hotel, and are ok with (mostly)budget type hotelsEveryone is different but when I travel I stay in areas that I can walk out of the hotel and have bars and restaurants all in a consolidated spot., vibrant areas, etc

Hotel Circle offers none of that. It's an area that is located along a freeway with really not much to do outside of your hotel.

Hotel Circle dates from the days when San Diego was a lot smaller and these motels dotted the end of US Route 80 before the Interstate Highway System came into being. It is still a great place for those with cars who want inexpensive lodging, but without a car, it is not a good location,

Old Town and Little Italy are better options.

Hi and welcome to San Diego

Please don't confuse the Old Town Trolley (tourist hop-on, hop-off bus) with the San Diego Trolley, our commuter light rail system.

Here's a map of where the Old Town Trolley tour busses stop:

And here's a link to the SDMTS Trolley map:

Neither serve Hotel Circle very well, if at all. (The San Diego Trolley light rail has a stop at Fashion Valley Mall that could be a 1.2 to 1.5 mile walk from your hotel, depending on location.)

If you stay in Old Town, Little Italy, or downtown, you will have better access to both the Old Town Trolley and the San Diego Trolley.

Just to clarify, some Hotels in Hotel Circle, such as the Handlery and the Town and Country are within about a 1/2 mile or less walk to the Fashion Valley Transit Center.

I like the Old Town area, it has the Old Town Transit Center, lots of choices and Hotel styles.

A basic option that is highly rated at TA is the Old Town Inn. I also like the Fairfield Inn, nicer property and rooms, recently renovated. The Cosmopolitan is an unique historic property.

I agree that Little Italy, Downtown and Old Town are the best places to stay for access to the Trolley and Buses. In Little Italy there's inexpensive La Pensione & Porto Vista. The Best Western Plus Bayside will be a bit more money.

On Pacific Hwy a few mins walk away is a Days Inn, Pacific Inn, Marina Inn and Suites, Residence Inn and Motel 6. All good for public transportation and walking distance to the Downtown sites.
