San Diego without a car

Hi,

We want to visit San Diego for 5-6 days in August, but are too young to rent a car so we will be without one for the entire trip.

We want to visit La Jolla, Balboa Park (and zoo), and preferably stay in the gas lamp/little italy area (walking distance from restaurants, etc.). Is this possible without a car?

Thanks!

Is one of you at least 21 to be able to check into the hotel?

The best areas to stay w/o a car are Downtown, Little Italy and Old Town. You can get around to most sites easily from those areas. The lightrail trolley is a good way to get around as well as the bus. Lot's of restaurants, cafes, bars and nightlife in Downtown. Lot's of restaurants, cafes in Little Italy but not much late night nightlife.

Of the places you mentioned La Jolla is the longest commute. From Downtown & Old Town you'd take the #30 bus and it will take approx and hour.

On the right side of this page you will see there are Top Questions and one of them deals with public transit here in San Diego. IF you click on it there are 2 trip reports written by folks who went all over our city using our transit system.

I wouldn't automatically assume you are too young to rent a car. There are companies, including Hertz and Avis, that do rent to young drivers in many locations, but they do charge a premium for it.

another option if you like to bike ride is renting bikes. i had family members who got around for a week on bikes. the tourism board can give you a good map of bike trails. even a great idea if only for a day. you can take the ferry over to coronado from downtown and use the bikes to get around the island...drive south down "the strand" and enjoy those grea beaches. found this http://www.efgh.com/bike/redroute.htm

Depending on what attracts you about La Jolla, you may want to consider Coronado as an alternative. Just hop on the ferry from downtown - 15 minutes on the ferry crossing San Diego Bay as opposed to an hour on a bus. Plenty of shops and restaurants, the bay and the beach. You can walk, or rent Segways or bikes.

Hi, thanks for your reply. We are staying for a week and the sea lion beach and other items attracted us to La Jolla, but perhaps we will just fit both in! Thanks!
