best hotels on or near beach for < $400/night

I am looking for suggestions for hotels that are either right on the beach, or just a couple minutes walk from the beach. Thanks!

Hi,

It would help to know a little more about you and your interests first. Also, time of year of your visit will impact pricing.

If you're into a more quiet scene, you may want to check out the Hotel del Coronado (look for their get a night free specials). The beach is wide and has NO commercial establishments on it other than the hotel. That means no hot dog stands, no surfboard rental shops, no bars, no restaurants, etc. However, just a block or so inland is Orange Ave. with shopping and restaurants.

If you're more into the active scene, then Pacific Beach / Mission Beach are your better choices. They have a 3-mile long boardwalk (actually concrete sidewalk) with shops, bars, and restaurants. In Pacific Beach, check out Tower 23 or Capri (a condo complex that rents out like a hotel).

Enjoy your visit.

Without knowing more about your beach preferences or which month you're coming ... the ones that come to mind are:

Pacific Terrace -- on the boardwalk/beach in Pacific Beach

Hotel Del Coronado - iconic, historical hotel on Coronado's main beach

La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club - upscale property at La Jolla Shores with a semi-private peach (actually, I'm not too sure about their rates)

Hotel Del Coronado absolutely the best.

Thanks for the replies. A little more info: We are a family of three with a 3.5 year-old son who wants to play on the beach. Would like a sandy beach just outside our hotel. We would favor a quieter area, but not so isolated that there aren't any shops or restaurants nearby. Sounds like La Jolla Shores is a good option. Hotel del Coronado would be a little pricey (the promos are not available for the week of the Fourth of July, which is when we'll be going).

Thanks.!

Thanks for the additional information.

For a quieter atmosphere on the 4th of July week, avoid Pacific Beach.

Yes, La Jolla Shores or Coronado would be good location for you -- however, it looks like the two hotels right at the beach (LJ Shores Hotel and LJ Beach & Tennis Club) are either already booked that week or too pricey (my quick check of the LJ Beach & Tennis Club for that week said it was $900/night - crazy!).

There's also Hotel La Jolla, now part of the Kimpton chain of boutique hotels, that's near La Jolla Shores, but on the other side of a busy street that runs through the area.

Coronado has a lot of options other than the Hotel Del ... I would think that you could find a good one in your price range as long as there's still availability.

Another idea is to look at bay-front beach hotels since your child is still a toddler. There are several hotels with beaches for their guests that are on the bay. For instance, the Coronado Island Marriott Resort is a beautiful property on the Ferry Landing side of the island.

Others that come to mind are: 1) Paradise Point in Mission Bay; and 2) The Catamaran Resort at Mission Bay - with the beach/ocean just across the street also so you have easy access to beaches at both the bay and ocean.

With a 3 1/2 year old I'd go to the Catamaran Resort. You are a block from the ocean beach and are on a great, protected bay beach.

You might want to look into a condo where it's like an apt rather than just a hotel room especially with a child. We just booked Capri by the Sea in Paciific Beach on the quiet part of PB...you can stroll the boardwalk to shops and restaurants...and to the end to mission beach where they have a small amusement park.LaJolla is beautiful but more quiet. Hotels on PB if that's what you prefer would be Pacific Terrace and the Catamaran. Other people told you about choices in la jolla. If you want to look at rentals check out Vrbo...you can see pics and then make a decision.
