Summer trip ideas for dad + 2 daughters (9 & 12)?

Hey all.... We've been to SD/Carslbad a few times and done a few of the touristy things, naturally (Seaworld, Zoo and Legoland). We'll be driving to the area and staying at La Costa in Carlsbad (we stayed there once before and the kids had a blast) but do plan on driving into SD at least a couple of times.

We're interested in checking out Seaworld's Aquatica water park (which opens June 1) and returning to the Corvette Diner (the girls love that place) but other than that, we don't have any formal plans. They've probably outgrown Legoland and we've been to Seaworld and the zoo several times so we'll probably pass. We've never gone to the Safari Park so I wonder if that is something we should do.

I think they'd like to kayak again if we can squeeze all-of-us on one kayak (I see most places list only single and double kayaks) and maybe do something else in the water. We had jet skied before but we ended up freezing out in the Bay around the same time of the year. Maybe a speedboat would be more fun? For these water activities is it fun in the Carlsbad Lagoon or worth driving into SD for one or both?

Thanks for any ideas!

The Carlsbad Lagoon would be quiet water so maybe easier/safer and certainly closer to your hotel!

How about walking/hiking at Torrey Pines State Park or even on campus at UCSD for their sculpture walk.

There's even a weird tilted house sculpture(Falling Star) as part of the collection.

The Safari Park in summer will be VERY hot sooo if you go do it in the AM.

If the girls like animals they'd love one of the extra safaris where you go inside the enclosures and get to feed giraffes and rhinos.

Have you been to Balboa Park?

Have you biked at Mission Bay Park or on Coronado?

The new water park is actually south of the city of San Diego so take drive time into consideration when you go.

If you come to the Aquatica Park here in Chula Vista, you may also want to stop to check out the US Olympic Training Center here.

Check out its website before you go to see if there are any events or athletes in training during your visit.

Also here in Chula Vista is the Living Coast Discovery Center on San Diego Harbor.

On Point Loma, there's the Cabrillo National Monument with its lighthouse, amazing views of San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean, and the tide pools. (The park closes at 5 PM so be there by 3 PM to allow enough time to experience it.)

Finally, for some fun along Mission Beach, there's Belmont Park.

Finally, if you don't mind driving an hour and a half to the east of town, check out Julian with its quaint shops and great apple pie.

Enjoy your visit.

I 2nd the recommendation for walking/hiking Torrey pines state reserve. The cost is parking unless you are lucky to find street parking. Check out their website for the guided tour with a docent. It is free and very informative for adults and kiddies. This is one of my favorite trails.

Hi there-

OUr family is heading out in August and while my Son & Husband are touring the aircraft carrier for hours, my DD and & I will be heading to this place for a couple of hours to take a class.

It's one of those things on my bucket list, and my Daughter couldn't be more thrilled to go! Great pretty much for all ages.

The way a kayak is set up you cannot squeeze an extra person in, the hole just fits one person. I kayaked in a 3 person kayak in Alaska so they do exist. I would call the different shops and ask if they have one.

I agree to check out Carlsbad Lagoon, lots to do. The boys wake boarded there and loved it. http://www.carlsbadlagoon.com/

In addition to the other suggestions, I'd recommend Belmont Park in Mission Beach. It's a small amusement park at the beach with an old-fashioned wood roller coaster.

There are also bike rental places around there if you want to go on a family bike ride along the beach boardwalk or Mission Bay trails.

Wow, thanks everybody! I've gotten some great ideas from you all and will run them by my girls to see what they'd like to do. Belmont Park sounds like it'll be a winner with them.

Has anybody rented a speedboat? Would the Lagoon be too small for that activity? Also, has anybody had experience with chartering fishing boats? My daughters recently indicated an interest in fishing. So between their input and yours the itinerary is starting to take shape.

I have no first hand experience or knowledge with this company but we have recently had some visitors say they did this and that it was a great time. I would def search for reviews before booking

Thanks for that link to the speedboatadventures site. Unfortunately, they only appear to have 2 seats in their boats, so that won't work for the 3 of us. It's too bad since I can get a discount at work for that company.
