Where to eat around Safari park?

Hi,

I'm going to visit Safari park. I plan to arrive around 1pm, so I would like have lunch near the Safari. I've heard that the food in the park is overpriced and not that good.

I've searched google map, but it really doesn't give me much information.

Any locals here?

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is isolated...

So how are you coming to visit from the LA area? Headed down I-15 to Escondido, or the I-5 to Oceanside, then east to the Escondido area.

The SDZSP food isn't that bad, some places are better than others, but it will be HOT, so I would opt to eat before the park in an indoor, air conditioned restaurant.

What type of food are you interested in....

Hi Darkbeer // Yes, I'm coming from LA.

Well, I'm looking for any type of food...except for franchises.

Thank you so much for your comment.

On your way back, consider eating in Escondido. You might want to stop at Lourdes Mexican Food, at 650 S. Escondido Boulevard, in for the chicken soup. It's really just a taco shop, not a restaurant, and most of the food there is standard taco shop, no better than average. But the chicken soup there is way above average and even reportedly has curative powers. (?). If you like Vietnamese or Chinese food, go to Pho Truc Xanh at 503 W. Mission Avenue in Escondido. It's a 1950s-era diner converted to a Viet/Chinese restaurant. All the standard Vietnamese items - I would recommend the cold spring rolls (GỎI CUỐN) and the iced coffee with condensed milk (CÀ PHÊ SỮA (ĐÁ)) which has to drip slowly into the glass of milk, then you stir it up. Plus whatever hot dishes you want. They also have Chinese.

Here is a list of the offerings at the SDZSP....

Since you are not admitting which route you are taking, it is hard to let you know what to recommened.

The Valley View Casino offers a free Lobster Buffet if everyone in your group is over 21, and doesn't require one cent of gambling. (But of course, they want you to...). Close to the SDZSP.

If you like wineries, stop by Temecula on the way to/from Safari Park... For lunch, we like Cafe Champagne

In Escondido if you just want a sandwich type lunch, Hungry Bear has great sandwiches.....and filling...

The only thing close to the Park is the Westfield Mall. Which unfortunately mainly has chain type restaurants. If you are coming down the 78 to the 15 you can take the Valley Pkwy exit and look for Cocina Del Charro or Surf Bros that sells grilled teriyaki chicken and beef with rice and cabbage salad. For sandwiches try the Continental Deli on Kalmia st.
