Beach House to rent in January, 2015

We'd like to spend a week in southern CA mid-January 2014 wherever we'll have the best chance of warmth and sun, on or very close to a beach. We will be six adults (including one very pregnant woman) and two children ages 5 and 1.

Looking for some advice on good towns/locations, safe beaches for kids, reasonable prices.

I'm posting this on the San Diego forum, but it doesn't have to be in San Diego. Probably San Diego County would make sense, since we're trying to get as far south as possible without leaving the country. Thanks for any advice you can give!

thanks. I'll probably rent through VRBO. What I really want is advice about which beaches are safest for kids and where we're most likely to find good beach weather in mid-January.

Hi Pennsylvania.Judy !

When you say "which beaches are safest for kids" - please explain what you mean by that. Safe how? I'm trying to figure that out. All our beaches have waves. The majority have lifeguards. Although some may not be manned in Jan. Is that what you're asking?

Also, the water will be very, very cold. So not exactly swimming weather without wetsuits. The weather can get warm in January but there is no predicting it.

The average historical water temperatures in January along the San Diego County coast run 57°F to 59°F.

Yes, I was mostly thinking about big waves, undertow, rocky shores, etc. If the water really is that cold, we might not even get into bathing suits, but would play in the sand in our sweatshirts. I'm aware of some fun things for kids in the San Diego area, like the zoo and Legoland, which we would probably visit. But I still want this to feel like a beach vacation. I've found a few houses to rent that look possible in Pacific Beach, Cardiff and Coronado. I'm from Oregon (formerly from PA) -- what do I know? Comments from the locals would be most appreciated!

Pacific Beach, Mission Beach and Coronado would all be great choices.

The neighborhoods you're looking into are all great choices.

restaurants, cafes, and shopping in pacific beach are more accessible on foot or bike. if you stay towards the northern end of Mission Beach (near pacific beach drive, you'll also have quick access to everything in Pacific Beach). What's nice about these two neighborhoods is you also have access to the bay.

I love Cardiff by the Sea, but I recommend staying near Downtown Encinitas (near/between Santa fe Drive and Encinitas Blvd), so you can be walking/biking distance to restaurants, cafes, & boutiques; Moonlight Beach is really nice or you can beach it at San Elijo State Beach.

If you're up for it, take a surf lesson while you're here. Even though the water will be chilly, it's a ton of fun and surf schools will have wetsuits.

Have a great time!

We're at Capri by the Sea which is a rental condo in Pacific Beach...on a bluff on the beach with a boardwalk in front, think your kids might enjoy...very close to La jolla. Hotel next to it is Pacific Terrace also very nice. just took daytrip to Coronado so beautiful but you might like the casual vibe of PB with the surfers

mission beach area...you can rent right on the beach which is awesome for sunsets, ocean waves etc. there is also a bay side which is quieter...still has a pathway for walking around, sand but it is a short block from the beach but you wouldn't have the sun sets. capri by the sea is a great location...their pool is not onsite. it's about a 1/2 block away. if it's outdoors, ask them if they heat it in january. ocean will be way too cold to go into. coronado is very nice. if i rented there for a week, i'd rent bikes for a few days...nice and flat for getting around, nice beaches, you can take the ferry from coronado to downtown san diego which could be fun for the kids.

The bayside of Mission or Pacific beach is your best bet. No waves no steep drop but no lifeguards. We lived there for years. 22miles of boardwalk/bike paths. 4 block walk to the ocean side. Pacific beach has more shops and eateries Mission beach has Belmont park for playtime. everything can be reached by bike or walk.

A tourist would not know the dividing line between the two beaches. water will be way to cold although I have seen tourists bouncing in it just to say they were in the pacific weather can go either way from day to day. drive to Old Town lots of free parking and catch Old Trolley for great overview of San Diego
