Trip to San Diego - October 2014

Hi

We are a party of 6 adults travelling to USA on a 2 week+ anniversary trip. We start with 4 nights in Las Vegas, driving down to Grand Canyon for 1 night and then driving onto San Diego for 4 nights before flying down to Sea of Cortez for a weeks sailing.

We would like to stay in a house or condo for the 4 nights in San Diego as we would like to relax and recharge our batteries in the middle of a hectic schedule.

The beach areas look nice but I am not sure if staying there would be conducive at the end of October. If the weather is likely to be okay can anyone recommend an area or even a nice house or condo.

If not would we be better off staying nearer the city.

We will have a car but our priority is to find someone relaxing and quiet so we can catch up on sleep.

Of course we want to still want to see all that San Diego has to offer so do not want to be too remote.

Any suggestions welcomed.

There are many beach areas within the city of San Diego. When you say "nearer the city" I imagine you mean our small bayfront downtown which is certainly not the whole city.

There is no problem with staying in a lovely home near a beach and driving to whatever activity you'd like to do. By car areas from Coronado north to La Jolla Shores will be about a 20 min. drive or less to activities.

You may not find the ocean water warm enough for swimming but we walk on the beaches year round! I was out yesterday in shorts!

You don't mention your price point for this house but I'd start by looking on this site of on a site like www.vrbo.com vacation rentals by owner

You might also look at a place like the Coronado Beach Resort which is not so much a resort but a condo complex with 1 and 2 bedrooms available for rent.

Coronado is directly across the bay from downtown San Diego and has a small town feel with a main street with shops/restaurant. There is also a lovely quiet beach with an historic Victorian hotel which you may like to visit. There is easy access to downtown by a no toll bridge, buses, passenger ferry(15min.) and our hop on hop off bus tour stops there too.

There are many other possibilities but you mentioned quiet several times in your post and so this is what I thought of first.

A popular area with lots of VRBO's is the Mission Beach/Pacific Beach area of San Diego next the Pacific Ocean and Mission Bay.

A nice central location, lots of great places to eat/drink/shop in Pacific Beach, and an easy drive to other parts of the city.

I think Coronado would be a good place for you to recharge your batteries. It's a lovely beach town and as described by Riff. Nice village with restaurants. Short drive to any sites you want to see. Approx 10 min drive to Downtown SD. We just had a trip report from someone who stayed at the Coronado Beach Resort and she and her husband loved it.

La Jolla is also nice and has more in the way of shops, art galleries, restaurants. Nice village.

Pacific Beach is more gritty and surfer vibe. Oct will be after the busy, crowded season so it will be quieter then. You might look at Capri By the Sea for a condo rental. But there are certainly others.

FYI, the Mission Beach area would be a bit more quiet than the Pacific Beach area in October.

But you are still close enough to take advantage of the restaurants and shopping in the PB area.

Just note that there are certain locations in Mission Beach that aren't really walkable to a variety of restaurants or places to drink. So you have to map out a rental and search nearby to see what is actually in walking distance.

Hi!

I also suggest Solana Beach as an area to stay in (west of Interstate 5 near Coast Highway). There are plenty of condominium rentals, and it's a really nice beach town. It also has a train station, so you can take it to Downtown San Diego. Solana Beach has the Cedros District for shopping and dining; there's the Belly Up Tavern that has live music and concerts.

We can have really nice beach weather in October, sometimes nicer than our Summer beach weather. Just the other day it felt about high 70s at the coast :)
