Thanksgiving dinner recomendations please

Hi we are a family of Brits on vacation in San Diego for thanksgiving next week and would really like to experience an authentic American meal to celebrate the holidays. Can anyone recommend a good place. We are staying in Mission Bay but have a car so can travel.

Thanks and happy holidays... :)

The thread listed above has a link to Opentable where you can read various menus and see prices for many places open on Thanksgiving. You can also use the site to make reservations.

There are buffets and sit down prix fixe meals so take some time to read through and see what appeals to you. They will be at different price points too.

In addition if you want an activity that is open during Thanksgiving Day you might consider going to the zoo which also has either a sit down meal or a buffet offered on that day:

I tried too post before BlackBelt about 6 times and every time I'd get a message from TA saying:

"This site has gone on vacation"

Finally had to shut down my computer and restart. I don't even know if this will go through...

I just wanted to add that you didn't say where you are staying?

If you are at a hotel like the Catamaran they will have a Thanksgiving buffet too.

In addition if you pay for the brunch you get a free bay cruise.

Of course this is open to the public so not just for hotel guests.

IF you are staying in a self catering rental then there are supermarkets around town that will sell you a complete Thanksgiving meal that you just need to heat and serve!

Let us know if you'd like suggestions for that sort of option as well.

Hi thanks for tips. We're rental at mission bay. I didn't know about the supermarkets, that may be our best chance at this late stage. I checked on Open table but it's pretty nuch booked up and we really want American rather than French etc..... Appreciate your help 😉

If you do decide to buy from a grocery store I would recommend Whole Foods in nearby La Jolla for good quality.

shop.wholefoodsmarket.com/store/default.aspx

And Bristol Farms also in La Jolla

Sprouts is another quality store and closer in Pacific Beach

There are Vons and Ralphs closer but I always find their prepared food too salty.

Bristol Farms & Whole Foods are outrageously overpriced I think. elizzie is right, Vons and Ralphs just aren't that good, but Sprouts is just about right, good price, good food. Get your order in soon if you want to go that direction.

The meals are "heat and serve" as Riff says, so that means the turkey, which already fully cooked needs about 2 1/2 - 3 hours to reheat depending on the size.

If that sounds like too much work, the Catamaran is close. If you don't go there for Thanksgiving, their Sunday Brunch is great.

I actually didn't think that Whole Foods was that expensive. A cooked Turkey dinner for 4 is $60. Granted it's the turkey breast and not the whole turkey but it's a full dinner for 4.

Sprouts has quality food as well.

Yeah, we usually get the complete meals and then some depending on the size of the crowd. We'll be in Corona del Mar this Thanksgiving. Whole Foods started at $110, Gelson's $125, Bristol Farms was about $140 since you had to get everything ala carte. At $70 Sprouts felt like a real deal.

If I was looking for a smaller meal, the turkey breast sounds a whole lot easier than carving a whole bird.

While not gourmet cuisine, the Thanksgiving Buffet at both of the local casinos are quite a spread of food!
