Need hotel help for college students going to BCS

I was wondering if anyone could make a hotel recommendation for 4 college students traveling out to San Diego for the BCS National Championship game in Pasadena. (There was no air available into Los Angeles). I am looking for a safe area with sightseeing activities close to inexpensive restaurants. They will be driving to Acadia to stay before the game and then back to San Diego airport to fly home. A Hilton hotel would be nice since we are HH members. They are not looking for nightlife but just some general sightseeing-they will be in San Diego for 2 nights. It's nerve racking to worry they will end up in a bad part of town so would just like some general advice from the locals. Thanks in advance!

So will they have a car? That is crucial to recommendations. What is your budget?

My first though is the Hilton Bayfront, as a business hotel, they might be inexpensive if there are no conventions.

There are some cheaper Hilton properties in Mission Valley, but it is a lousy location without a car.

The DoubleTree Downtown isn't my favorite, but it is an okay location and not too expensive.

Yes, they will have a car! The Hilton Bayfront is one I looked At with a price of 119 a night. Since they may be forced to stay 4 to a room, I was leaning towards the larger suite hotels such as Embassy and Homewood Suites such as ES San Diego Bay or La Jolla or Homewood Suites Del Mar or Carlsbad. Any info on these hotels would be appreciated!

I would not go any further north than La Jolla, meaning no on Del Mar & Carlsbad.

The only negative about the Hilton Bayfront and Embassy Suites Downtown is that parking is likely to run $35 a night. Those would be my first choices in terms of great locations, but the extra parking cost stinks.

I'd look at the DoubleTree in Mission Valley and the Hilton Mission Valley since they have a car. Not a pretty area, but central and parking is probably cheaper, maybe free......... although if it were me..... I'd eat ramen for an extra month to stay at the Hilton Bayfront.

That is the one I was talking about above.... expensive parking, but a great location, included breakfast and an included Happy Hour for those 21+

if the Hilton Bayfront & ES Downtown were the same cost, I'd go with the Hilton Bayfront. There is also a DoubleTree two blocks up from the ES that should be even cheaper.

First, how old are these college students? Some hotels won't allow uner 21 to check in. Is there someone at least 21? If not, then hotels need to be picked based on 18+.

If they are not looking for nightlife does that mean under 21 for check in age?

There's a Homewood Suites Liberty Station close to the airport. There are restaurants which are non-nightlife right next door. I haven't checked to see what their check-in age policy is.

Hi Supermom,

I would agree with Elizzie's recommendation for Homewood Suites Liberty Station. It's in a good neighborhood; about 5 minutes from the airport (without the airport noise); has free parking; free breakfasts every day and free dinners Mon. - Thurs.; and is within a 20-25 minute drive to most of San Diego's major attractions (Zoo, SeaWorld, Old Town, Cabrillo National Monument, Little Italy, La Jolla, Balboa Park, the Embarcadero, USS Midway, Seaport Village, the Gaslamp Quarter.)

Im glad that they are getting to spend time in SD, but I find it hard to believe that there were no flights available into any of the Metro LA airports.

Between:

LAX

Long Beach

Burbank

Ontario

Orange County

Surely there were flights available from wherever their starting point is.

I'm baffled too that you can't find flights closer to LA than San Diego.

My guess it is cost, not availability. Booking tickets 3 weeks out is never cheap and then add in the tickets being sold for the BCS and Rose Bowl, I am thinking SAN just came up cheaper.
