what to do

my wife, child 13yr old and myself are coming to SD in march, we are driving from Anaheim on the Saturday and going to seaworld for the day, then off to our hotel (Declan suite). We plan to do something that night and something the next day before we drive back to Los Angeles, then off to vegas.

We were thinking of going to the zoo or zafari zoo, but I reckon all zoo's are the same and are very expensive. What would you guys recommend we could do for the day (sunday)

kind regards

San Diego is a large city with many things to see/do!

We do not know your interests besides the animal parks you have mentioned so it is hard to know what to suggest for your day?

There are ships to visit and bay cruises. There's Balboa Park with its small museums, gardens, outdoor entertainment, artisan shops, live theater and of course our zoo.

There are places to see beautiful scenery,walk/hike /bike.

There are historic sites-Cabrillo National Monument with Ca. history, great 180deg.views, lighthouse, tide pools.

enjoy the city...don't do another "theme park". it's a beautiful city with plenty of things to offer.

Your right about another theme park, we would like to do something fun, but not another theme park. We like sight seeing, so thinking of going somewhere nice and having lunch followed by a nice walk or bike ride or even a cruise

Great bike riding along the beach front from Pacific Beach to Mission Beach and around the bay into Mission Bay Park. Lots of places to eat along the way.

You can also go across the bay to Coronado and rent bikes or 4 wheeled pedal vehicles called surreys to pedal around, visit the historic Victorian Hotel del Coronado, the beach etc.

There are bay sightseeing cruises , and other boat experiences like the speed boat experience which might be fun.

You can take a passenger ferry from downtown to these rental places at the ferry landing in Coronado:

Since you have a car I would drive to Coronado and park for free at the Ferry Landing and you can rent bikes there. Maybe have lunch.

Then you can either go to Balboa Park or Pacific Beach or Mission Bay & Beach. Or take a harbor cruise. Visit the Maritime Museum or the USS Midway.

I like elizzie's idea of going to Coronado Island and renting bikes -- or just have a nice walk along the bayfront -- there are several good restaurants at the Ferry Landing complex with wonderful views of our skyline. While in Coronado, be sure to drive to the other side of the island to see the historic Hotel Del Coronado, a beautiful old Victorian with lovely grounds that you can explore as you make your way to the hotel's beachfront for more great views.

Then I think I'd head over to Balboa Park, our showcase urban cultural park. You'll find impressive, “old world” architecture. Most of the structures were built to host two world expos - they now house a variety of specialty museums and performing arts theatres. Balboa Park is a beautiful mix of stately Spanish colonial-style buildings, mature trees & landscaping, and an impressive pedestrian promenade. There's also a lovely restaurant there called "The Prado" (pricey; reservations recommended) along with a variety of more casual snack bars that sell lunch food (my favorite is the Tea Pavilion next to the Japanese Friendship Garden).

Another vote for the Pacific Beach/Mission Beach/Mission Bay area and renting bikes.

Can anyone recommend a cruise we could go on around the bay, thinking 2-3 hours ( is that enough?)

Most of the harbor cruises are 1 or 2 hours.

Hornblower & Flagship are a couple. You can also find discounts on their websites or on
