San Diego with a 9 y/o, 3 days and a very tight budget

my 9 y/o and I have an opportunity to be in San Diego this March. We have 3 full days to play but are on a really tight budget and have no car. We are staying at a hotel on S circle street.

Any suggestions?

I presume you are staying at one of the Hotels on South Hotel Circle, so you could use public transit. Maybe for one day, walk west down Hotel Circle South to the Old Town State Park and Presidio Park area, plenty of free and low cost things to do in the area.

Take the MTS Route 8, 9 or 30 to the Pacific Beach/Mission Beach area, plenty of parks and beach areas that are no cost to visit.

One more thing, on weekends (Saturday and Sunday, children under 12 ride for free with a paid adult on the MTS system of buses and the Trolley. So maybe time your bus trips if possible.

Hi cete -

Despite the fact that Hotel Circle South is not that far from Old Town - I would NOT recommend walking there. There are no sidewalks and I would find it unsafe especially with a child.

What do you want to visit? It's hard to give you directions w/o knowing where you want to go. The Zoo? SeaWorld? Downtown Bayfront? A beach?

Bus 88 runs on Hotel Circle South. It will take you to the Old Town Transit Center where you can change to either another bus or the lightrail trolley to get you to other destinations.

What did you have in mind when you booked this trip?

Does "low budget" mean you are looking for free activities or can you spend a little?

When are you coming?? If you let us know a little about what you expected then we can help you more intelligently.

Thanks for the responses. I can spend a little. I found a heavily discounted whale watching cruise with HandM cruises and USS midway tickets through AAA. I figured, that might cover 1 day or 2 half days. I looked at the suggestions and forums and we are looking at Coronado Island and the old point Loma lighthouse. Is that ambitious? Can we throw anything else in there? This is our 1st trip to San Diego and we won't be back for a very long while.

HandM cruises? I'll have to look them up. Never heard of them and don't know where they sail from. OK - I think you mean H & M. FYI - Flagship & Hornblower also give discounts and are located next to the USS Midway.

I don't know your exact hotel so I used Howard Johnson Hotel Circle So as a starting point

The Cabrillo National Monument (Light House) is somewhat difficult (multiple transfers) to get using public transit, and is only available on weekdays.

Oh - and to get to Coronado you can head back to Downtown and right near the Midway is the 15 min Ferry to Coronado

http://www.flagshipsd.com/coronado-ferry

It goes to the Ferry Landing

From there you can take either the 904 shuttle or 901 bus to get to the Village & Beach

Here are some websites that offer discounts

Thanks for the routing info. that is good info so I can build travel time into all the stops.

I looked at Flagship and Hornblower and did not find discounted tickets. Is there a sight where I can get promo codes?

In my post #8 I gave you a couple of websites. But, before booking anything come back here and make sure it's someplace easy to get to for you. Also NOTE that not all of the sights / discounts are even in San Diego.

I happened to notice this one

and

and Flagship
