Do we really need a car rental if staying at Catamarans?

We are in the beginning stages of planning/ budgeting for our Christmas vacation. Do we need a car? We plan to mostly stay around the beach and Sea World, etc. I would like to hit up a winery, but do not want to have a car rental just sitting in the lot for 8 days just to go there. We could rent a car for the day if there is a place close to the hotel.

We are traveling with our 14 and 16 year olds. Are there places we should take them that anyone recommends?

Hi JDWE - Welcome to San Diego! Well, IMO you should rent a car for at least part of your stay. There is street parking near your hotel for free. And being Christmas I wouldn't necessarily count on just hanging around the beach. You could visit La Jolla from there on the bus in about 20 minutes. The same for visiting Old Town. Belmont Park is around a 10 min bus ride or you could walk in about an hour.

Then I would get a car to visit Downtown SD

They'll be an ice skating rink in Horton Plaza at the base of the NBC bldg.

Drive to Coronado where the Hotel del Coronado will be all decked out in lights and they'll have an ice skating rink on the beach. Coronado is a good place to spend a few hours.

Drive to Balboa Park

Drive to Cabrillo Nat'l Monument and take in the fantastic view

OK, thanks! I was just not wanting to spend close to $200 in parking fees for the 8 nights we will be there. But, looks like we should.

We are from MN, so seeing a ice rink on a beach will be funny. We may be the only ones in the pool too! LOL

The rink is unique! Here are some photos

Like I said, maybe you only need the car part of your stay. Maybe start your visit w/o one and do the Pacific Beach, La Jolla, Mission Bay, SeaWorld, Old Town things. Assess the street parking and then get a car. Agencies like Enterprise will come pick you up and take you to their office. I've been to one of their offices in PB and I think they have one even closer to the hotel.

Then you can do the other things I mentioned with the car. Those things would take you an hour to get to on the bus or combo bus / trolley. So those places are best with a car.

Maybe rent a car for 3-4 days. Enterprise in PB will pick you up and drop you off. You are staying in a great location with plenty of restaurants. You picked one of my favorite hotels!

That rink is awesome!

I will check into car rentals for part of the time. We will be happy to get out of MN for Christmas this year. This winter has been aweful. More snow tonight!

Well, as far as weather goes the ONE thing I can absolutely 100% guarantee is that it will NOT snow !!! Yeah!!!

Every time I watch the weather reports on the news I so feel for you and anywhere that is living through your winter (....spring, now.)

Yes you need a car.

The ice rink will actually be ON the beach this coming Christmas season. It was getting so expensive to re-sod the grass area that they sought and got permission to move it onto the sand. Should be an interesting twist.

The Outlets at Viejas up in Alpine also has a rink that is nice.

You do not have to pay for parking when staying at the Cat.

We have stayed there ourselves for in town staycations. There is free parking on the residential streets just north of the hotel. You would only have to walk maybe 1/2 block to 1 block to find parking. It is perfectly legal and safe just read the signs to see which days there will be street cleaning.

You will not just hang at the beach in December unless the weather is unusually warm.

This is not the Caribbean or Florida!! There's a lot here to do besides beach time!

"You do not have to pay for parking when staying at the Cat."

Riff's Mom is right on. It will be the low season for tourists in PB, so there should be some street parking available.

from the catamaran, you can enjoy walking along the bay as well as along the ocean. i think it use t only take me about 20 minutes to walk from pacific beach to belmont park in mission beach. take the bus to sea world to avoid the cost of parking there and renting the car for the day. if you go to the zoo / balboa park, parking is free. parking in la jolla can be a pain so you might want to consider busing it there but be prepared for lots of walking. i've spent christmas day in shorts and t-shirts, blading along the board walk. coming from a cold location, it was a thrill watching beach volleyball on christmas day. hopefully the catamaran heats their pool
