Great Island Hike

My husband and I just returned from our annual getaway to the Cape. One of our favorite things to do is hike is the Great Island trail that starts on Chequesset Neck Rd. This year we noticed a LOT of dead ducks (black and white) lining the shore and on the beach. I mean they were everywhere....it was kind of disturbing to see. We're curious if anyone knows why there were so many...we've never seen anything like it before.

I am so happy to have an answer for this. My boyfriend and I hiked the Great Island trail and we were very disturbed by the number of dead ducks. We must have seen at least 100 of them. We also saw one that was just barely alive. He couldn't fly and he looked really sick. It was really sad and so I really wanted to find out why this was happening.

Though it's still sad to see them lying dead, I am glad to know that it is a natural phenomenon.

Thanks for the post!

At least 100 ducks dead sounds like ALOT of dead ducks! Well, the Audobon Society knows about it, we'll see what happens next. Keep watching the local papers...

There were a lot...my guess was that we saw at least 75-100 also...it wasn't the enjoyable hike that it usually is...seeing the dead ducks every few feet was unsettling to say the least. I guess that's nature though...

Interesting article. Thanks for the link. Bob Prescott, who was mentioned in the article, is the person who answered my email inquiry. Looks like he's been getting lots of calls regarding the dead eiders.
