Wellfleet Vacation help

Hi everyone,

My family and I are headed to Wellfleet mid-July for the first time and I am super excited! It will be my little girls first time at the beach.

I just had a couple of questions...

We are renting a house on kendrick ave and I would like for the most part just to park our car and walk wherever we need to get to in Wellfleet. I was wondering how are the streets on wellfleet, from Kendrick ave can you walk to the center town ok with a toddler in a wagon? sidewalks?

Also I wanted to know what are Can't Miss things in wellfleet? Anyone have a fav restaurant? shop? etc..

Thanks!

Kristyn

Hi Kristyn! Did you happen to check the links on the left side of this screen re: shops, restaurants, things to do, etc. in Wellfleet? There's some great information there.

For restaurants, please read TA's reviews:

tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g60754-Wellfleet…

I'm not in Wellfleet enough to recommend a specific restaurant. :) I'm sure you'll get plenty of recommendations from the Wellfleet regulars.

It’s a nice, walk-able area – not as walk-able as some but I can see you rolling your toddler in that wagon from Kendrick up to Hatche’s Market by the Town Hall for produce and fish (they make a mean clam pie), to get a little breakfast at Aunt Sukie’s, to the old bookstore behind the Bookstore restaurant, ice cream at Mac’s on the pier and even for a little dip at Mayo Beach (make sure to have water socks as there are sharp oyster shells at that beach), the WHAT do see a children’s production – but you’ll only have seen a small portion of Wellfleet if you stick to those things.

To get to the ocean beaches (and these are the real stunners in that area of the Cape), ponds (a must for toddlers) and most restaurants you’ll need a car. Oh, and don’t forget the drive-in! There are very, very few places on the Cape where you can really get by without a car and Wellfleet is not one of them.

I’d also suggest you buy a beach sticker so you can park in the town beaches – the ladies who pass out beach stickers (they’ve got an office on the Town Pier) are a wealth of great information. They’ll give you a map and will highlight all the best places for you and your family – I’m always really pleased to see how much time they spend acquainting new people with the town. You can get lots of great information here but the best information you’re going to get is from locals once you’re in town.

Oh no! I hadn’t heard that it has closed. But really it was always a much better bar and raw bar (the owners own a big oyster farm in the Harbor) then restaurant - great for a sunset drink and a dozen oysters but rather depressing in the indoor dining rooms. And the food wasn’t all that great. So if the restaurant is gone but the bar and raw bar is sill there I could see that. But I’d be really sorry to see the whole thing gone – and that old second hand bookstore being gone would actually bring me to tears.

You may be getting this confused with the Lighthouse in Town (I hope)? That place is up for sale.

Don't worry Brooklyn, I just called the restaurant and, even though it is Monday morning and off-season, a really helpful gal answered the phone. She was shocked to hear that they had been mentioned as being (or going??) out of business. They are open for B, L, D during off-season Wed - Sun and are open for these meals every day in season (I think she said starting in April). Also, in the basement they have a bar called The Bomb Shelter which is open every night year round.

Please people, let's post responsibly and not post every little thought that runs through our minds accurate or not. Things are hard enough for our small business owners on the Cape as it is without having to deal with hints of their demise.

Thanks CCC – you're the best! I’ll bet the oysters are beyond yummy this time of year and it’s good to know there’s someplace to sample Wellfleet’s finest even in the off-season.

And regarding my info about the Lighthouse (just across from the Town Hall): my understanding is it’s the entire business that’s for sale and will still continue to be that same little sort of place no matter who owns it. Hopefully there will be a seamless transition: A good thing too because that’s also a good bet for AbbysMom for a walk-able, kid friendly breakfast.
