Visit Manteo, the cutest little town on the Outer Banks to find handcrafted art. The Dare County Arts Council now occupies the old county courthouse, right in the heart of the waterfront area. It is fill with artwork from local artists, including jewelry, paintings, photos, mosaics, fiber art, pottery, etc. Items large and small, inexpensive to expensive are for sale. Be sure to stop by.
Also, the small waterfront area is filled with other galleries, most containing handcrafted items as well. Some of the galleries have artists working onsite.
The waterfront areas is so cute. There is a boardwalk along the marina, and just several blocks of stores and restaurants. You can "do the town" in just a few hours. Then stop at one of the many restaurants, some with outdoor dining or water views. My favorites are Full Moon Cafe, Hungry Pelican (in the Waterfront Condo building) and Ortega's.
Manteo is a dog friendly town also. Many of the galleries and shops will welcome your pup, as will the restaurants with outdoor dining.
Most stores are open 10:00 am to 5:00pm. Many are closed on Sunday.
The towns celebrates "First Fridays" from approximately April through December. It generally runs from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The shops stay open late. Many serve free food and beverage. There are bands around town also. It does not get too crowded either. Come early and have dinner at one of the restaurants mentioned above!
