Mom & Son Trip Feb 16 3 nites

Thanks to everyone at tripadvisor I have a partially planned

itinerary for next Friday.

Friday

Arrive @LaGuardia around 10 a.m. ( Still need transportation to)

Shoreham hotel on 55th. Used the travelzoo special for $189 per

night w/ continental breakfast for 3 nights. Plan to check bags at

hotel and then off to Empire State Bldg. (Want to take subway

there, where can I pick up???can I buy 3/4 day pass??) Plan to

walk back uptown and take in the sites....(read about free entrance

to MOMA on Friday afternoon....when time does this start????

Return to hotel, check in & get ready for dinner reservations at

either Cite (42.50 fix price ) or AJ Maxwell (20% off diningfever.com).

Theater tickets (broadwaybox.com) for 65.00 to Hairspray.

Saturday

Take public transportion to Ferry (need help on how) to Statue of

Liberty and Ellis Island. Bought tickets for Circle Cruise on line

w/ free pass into Statue. Afterwards plan to visit Ground Zero,

Century 21, Soho, & Little Italy. Take public transportation back

to hotel. Rest and out for an Italian dinner????

Sunday

Brunch (don't know where). Then Rangers vs. Blackhawks game

at Madison Square Garden.(Tickets from StubHub.com) Off to Times Square. Need dinner somewhere and then probably to Rockerfeller Plaza.

Monday

Not many ideas yet...Wanted to see if we could get into some type

of television show. Probably Central Park.

Can anyone fill in any more places to see/do/eat. My 14 year old

is adventuresome....probably will omit the museums only because

we do have great museums in Chicago.

Was thinking of trying to get tickets to Jewtopia and would love to

try to get tickets to some type of television show, but understand

that there is an age restriction.

Thanks for helping me get this far. Cab or car from airport???

Subway and bus passes needed and hopefully where to pick up

a subway map. thanks as always

I've been researching watching a TV show taping for my trip with my 18 year old son in May, and have found there aren't many that tape before late afternoon/evening. So if you want to do that during the day, it will be hard to find something. Most of them require that you be 16 or older too. Also, it may be hard to get tickets to anything this close to your trip.

The Martha Stewart show is the only one I remember that allowed kids younger than 16 to attend. I don't know if your son would be interested in watching that type of show, but they do allow kids as young as 10 in the audience. I don't have any idea how hard tickets are to get, but you would go to www.marthastewart.com and click on the get tickets option. They tape weekdays at 10 & 2 and the studio is located on West 26th St between 7th & 8th Ave.

Have a good trip!

Take a subway. Go to hopstop.com for exact directions. You will take the #1 train at 50th & Broadway to the end, South Ferry. YOu need to be in the first 5 cars of the train to get off. Here's the map.

Hopstop will tell you exactly how much time it will take if you put in the day and hour you're going.

Also, where can I pick up a Metra (Subway and bus pass??)

It's MetrOcard. You can't buy them online but you can buy them down in the subway or at many delis.

Definitely cab from LGA to hotel. Don't take a ride from anyone who approaches you. Go to the taxi line. You'll tell the driver you want to go to 55th between 5th & 6th ave. and ask to take the 59th st. bridge (also called the Queensborough). If he asks which roadway, upper or lower, say whatever he thinks. ;) You'll get a nice view from either and avoid a toll.

On the same block as your hotel is La Bonne Soup, a good, inexpensive place for lunch or casual dinner. Burgers, sandwiches, quiche, crepes, salads, omelettes. (Decent for brunch but not special). There are also several good take out food places on the block. If you want to treat yourself to a manicure and/or pedicure, I use Bloomies right on the block. YOu don't need an appointment.

If you want a special brunch on Sunday and are both big eaters, Brasserie 8 1/2 is only a few blocks away and does a buffet brunch. Menu and details here

Someone has mentioned Cite will be closing and perhaps the food/service won't be great given that. I'll add the big draw there is the wine dinner (all the wine you can drink) so not sure it's the best choice for you and son (assuming he's not yet drinking :)

I wonder if you wouldn't enjoy an off Broadway show on Sat. night. You could try to get discount TKTS to Altar Boyz, Blue Man Group etc. Since you'll be downtown, maybe stop at the South STreet Seaport before going back to midtown and see if you can get some at the TKTS booth there.

If you'd just rather have an Italian dinner, what kind of place? Are you looking for spaghetti, casual or something nicer? At what time?

NY Whiz.....as always I love to read your comments! You are so

terrific!! Italian dinner is more casual...my son would probably like

chicken parm and I always like fettucini with proscuitto, & peas...

also really enjoy a real caesar salad. We probably would be looking

for a later dinner around 8:00 p.m. if by the hotel area or earlier

if it is near little italy or downtown area. Thanks

For an Italian dinner on Sat. night, Maria Pia is not far from your hotel and has a prix fixe dinner that would include a caesar salad, a pasta similar (but not exactly) what you describe and chicken parm.

www.mariapianyc.com/media/websitemari.html

Trattoria Dell 'Arte is a fun, lively Italian, also near your hotel (closer than above) with very very good food. It will be more expensive. They have my favorite veal parm. in all of NYC, so I'd guess the chicken parm. would also be good.

If you'd like to see a different neighborhood, something more residential, Pomodoro on Columbus Ave & 71 st (upper west side) will have what you want. It's a nice, moderately priced place.

Thanks for the info about Cite, really strange since I called them and

I have a reservation for next week. However, decided to listen to

all your comments and made a reservation at AJ Maxwells.

Now the the Italian Restaurant......NY whiz.....I checked into

the three recommendations and I think that Maria Pia fits the

bill. I made a reservation. However, I then went to the

Puttanesca website and found that this restaurant is the

"sister restaurant to Maria Pia". I checked both menus and

although similar, Puttanesca had the pagia e fieno I was talking

about. Also I have a 20% off coupon on dinner. What do you

think??????????????

I've never been, but the reviews on menupages don't sound encouraging. It also says they only take Amex or cash. (fyi) In the absence of someone else saying it's great, I think there are too many good to great Italian restaurants to go to some place that's mediocre.

Btw, if you do plan on going to Brasserie 8 1/2 for brunch, I noticed they're part of the nycvisit.com/paint promotion and there's a coupon for 15% off. It says lunch or dinner so not sure about brunch.
