Midtown Cinemas

Looking at things to do in the evening other than a show and is there a cinema anyone would recommend in and around midtown?

There is an AMC theater on 42nd street that offers 25 movies. Plenty of other theaters in midtown as well.

I don't know where in midtown you are staying, but in west midtown, there is the cinema mentioned in #1. If in east midtown, there isn;t much other than the Kips Bay multiplex at 2nd Av and 31st, as well as a 3-screen theater on 3d Av at 60th across from Bloomingdale's. There used to be many more, but as has been the case in many cities, they have closed, to be used for more profitable ventures.

Thank you both and the AMC sounds perfect as staying off just Times Square. Plenty of films to choose from, is it a good theater and they do any special offers or nights??

You can check their website for special offers. There are two large, modern theaters (AMC and Regal) right across the street from each other there, so if the AMC doesn't have what you want the Regal might.

I’ve been to that AMC on 42nd St several times. Nice theatres, show times late into the night, always busy but not crazy crowded.

You might also consider comedy clubs, casual clubs with music (jazz or otherwise), upscale cocktail lounges with music, museums that are open in the evenings (some are open until 9 pm) -or just exploring a charming neighborhood/sitting in an outdoor cafe.

Or, the many independent cinemas in town that show films you probably won't get to see back home. Or, the film offerings at MoMA or the Museum of the Moving Image. Or, off off Broadway theaters where tickets are as little as 9 dollars through TDF.org

My two favorite theaters in the City are: Lincoln Plaza Cinemas, http://www.lincolnplazacinema.com/ (by Lincoln Center, showing foreign and independent films) and the Paris Theater, https://www.citycinemas.com/paris (across the street from the Plaza Hotel on West 58th off of Fifth Avenue).

There is also an AMC on 34th Street, just west of 8th Avenue.

Check their site, a lot of theaters have reduced pricing on the first showing each day.
