Air train from JFK to time hotel

We arrive on Wednesday which I hear is the busiest travel day of the year? We fly in at 5:45pm and wondered whether the air train would be suitable with 2 heavy bags? How much would this cost in total? Also would traffic be bad at that time if we decided to get a shuttle bus or taxi?

The Airtrain is the name of the monorail that circles JFK airport. You'd need to connect to either the subway or Long Island Rail Road ("LIRR") to get to Manhattan.

Are you arriving from overseas, needing to clear Immigration?

$5 for the AirTrain, $2.75 for the subway (included if you get a 7 day unlimited ride metro card).

Double check which subway stations you will be using to get to your hotel - since most stations have stairs only - not elevator - and even if they do it may not be working so you may need to carry your luggage up the stairs.

It's sutphin boulevard we have to get to from Jamaica station and the subway we get off at is 50 street subway station so fingers crossed they will be ok. We are young and fairly strong so carrying the bags hopefully won't be an issue. I was more concerned with how busy it was going to be being the day before thanksgiving!

Jamaica/Sutphin Blvd has elevators and escalators. 50th Street on the E train has elevators on the downtown side, which is the side you'll be arriving on.

The subway will not be that crowded: fewer office workers than usual will be commuting. It's road traffic that will be terrible, so taking the subway is an excellent idea.
