Grocery Shopping for Affinia Dumont?

When you stayed there, where did you shop? I don't want to do the little con stores, as they are $$$ - I want a *real* grocery store with a good bakery, nice produce etc. Anyone make up a shopping list that they'd like to share? I always forget staples away from home and end up having to reshop......

Our "real" grocery stores (Food Emporium, etc.), unfortunately, do not have good produce or baked goods. I'm sure there are markets nearby, but I'd recommend you hop the subway (#6 headed downtown) to Union Square and hit the Whole Foods Market there. Another couple of short blocks east is Trader Joe's, another good option.

And, of course, if you're coming in growing season, the farmer's market at Union Square is wonderful (but only in the local growing season). The big market day is Saturday (go early!), but they're open Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays as well. (I'll have to double-check the other days for you.)

For a decent chain supermarket, go to the Food Eporium on the east side of Third Avvenue between 31st and 32nd, or the D'Agostino's on the west side of Third Avenue between 35th and 36th. For a better selection of produce (without having to go down to the Greenmarket or Whole Foods), as well as good baked goods and bread, a good butcher and excellent cheese, go to Todaro's, a specialty store on the west side of Second Avenue between 30th and 31st.

I forgot about Todaro's. Excellent.

Oh thank you! I hit the jackpot here!

Should have asked about a liquor store too / need a few bottles of wine.

And to find a "local" pub where we can sit and have a drink or three and watch people - will be about set. Roll on, May.....

You can find any local business on google. Plug in the zip code, 10016. You even get a grid map with locations and info.

I think it's worth the trip to Trader Joe's for wine -- it's SO MUCH cheaper than neighborhood shops.

I haven't been there, but there is a newer liquor store that seems to specialize in wines on the west side of Third Avenue, somewhere between 34th and 37th.

On the east side of Third between 33rd and 34th are several restaurants, including at least one pub, where you can have a couple of drinks. In the warm weather several of these have tables outside. And I believe the Blockhead's Burrito has something going on up on its roof. You will find more options as you walk north from 34th on Third Avenue (e.g., 35th, 36th, etc.).

I've never done this before, but for my next trip into NYC, I'm going to try freshdirect.com. You can order on line and have them deliver to the hotel. At least for the heavier items. Then you can go to the market & just pick your produce there. I'm sure the Affinia would even hold the groceries for your arrival.

I love freshdirect.com, and their produce is excellent...much better than the fruit and veggies you get in local supermarkets. However, they've got a $50 minimum.
