VRBO,com Is this a reputable company to rent from?

We are thinking of renting listing #132232 from VRBO for a month and would love to know if anyone has any experiences with this agency?

I read on one forum to be careful renting from private owners as it could be a scam.

Also does anyone know if this is a nice area, it's on 8th ave at 18th street and i've tried to map it but i'm not sure what that means as in does that mean on the corner of 8th ave and 18th street.?

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated

VRBO stands for Vacation Rentals By Owner, which is renting from private owners. I have used VRBO and had no problems, and I've not heard of anyone else having a problem. I do see what you're saying about how it could be a scam, although it never occurred to me when I did it. Perhaps others will have more to say about it.

Thanks Claire

I've read some of the remarks and it does seem that a lot of people have had good experiences with this site, I'm just a bit concerned because this apartment doesn't seem to have been rented out before.

I sent an e-mail to the owner requesting availability and she replied almost immediatly and seems really friendly.

If anyone could provide any more advice -much appreciated

The location is a good one in the Chelsea section of the city. Looking at a map of Manhattan you will see that the avenues run east/west and the streets run north/south, so the apartment is at the intersection on 8 Avenue close to 18 Street.

Thanks NYC10025

Do you think this is a legit listing? My concern is that it appears to be a new listing and I have read on another forum to be cautious if thats the case.

Do you know if there is a way of checking this out

I'm new to all this and am trying to organise our long awaited and much anticipated first trip to New York for our belated 25th wedding anniversary

Whatever you do be careful how you make payments to her. Deposit should be paid by Paypal or CC. No money transfers, Western Union. etc. That way you have some level of protection.

Looking at the listing, it seems legitimate. What kind of advanced payment do they want? One thing I would do would call the owner which make you more comfortable..

I've just sent her an e-mail asking her how much deposit she requires and if she accepts credit cards, so we'll see.

Does paying by credit card afford more protection and why?

Bet you can all tell I'm new to all this!!

I doubt that she will accept a credit card payment because she is not a company but it would be much better if she would. If you make a payment by credit card and you do not receive the service that you paid for you can dispute the charge with your credit card company. The person who received the payment has to prove that the service was rendered or the credit card company will reverse the charge and credit your account.

Some of the property owners do accept CC payments. I know one property I am looking at through cyberrentals.com certainly does. If not, Paypal is the next best thing. Western Union is just plain dodgy. It's like sending a money order - do not use that service.

We have used VRBO for a rental of a cabin in the Poconos 3 years ago and it exceeded our expectations.

We are using them again this christmas for rental of a cabin in the aridondacks to try and have a white christmas.they are a legitimate organisation. An acquaintance who has done this a lot says he prefers to rent from a new owner as they often underprice their property-dont know how true that is.
