check out the UWS. its very safe lots of good restaurants and a subway ride to times square. After a busy day seeing the sites, this area has a very nice neighborhood feeling to it yet it is manhattan. Hotels in this area are On the Ave, the Beacon, Milburn,Lucerne. good luck its a fantastic city. I have been travelling to NYC for close to 20years now and it is a really safe city. I have also travelled on my own and always feel safe.

You also might want to check out Jack & Judy's Bed & Breakfast - I've stayed there my last two trips, and have reservations again for September. A great location in the safe, beautiful Upper Westside - and less expensive than nearby hotels.
