Sad News for Julius Fans

EATER alert...

WEST VILLAGE—Yesterday, Julius, the longstanding West 10th Street gay bar, was seized by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. To our gal on the scene, Kelly Dobkin: "According to the signs, looks like the building was seized due to nonpayment of taxes. Damn. Julius is one of if not the oldest gay bar in the city. (And from what I hear, they had a pretty good burger too.) As for their future? Looks grim. And considering the joint hasn't had a working phone number in quite some time, I'm going to turn my investigation toward other older pubs in the area and see if locals have any more information on the situation. Consider this developing." And so we shall. Hat tip to the Eater field agent, who initially alerted us to this situation.

We had a lovely evening in Julius last October and the burgers were indeed very good. The chef on duty that night was a treat, and all the locals welcomed the group of us with open arms. This is a real shame.

Yes, it is sad ... though it's basically a problem that I expect will get resolved between building owner and bar leasee. And while I can't go into details on a public forum I have emailed a bit of an update to some. In the meantime, folks are heading to Stonewall, which was recently updated and buffed to a shine by its new owners and who have made Julius patrons feel quite comfortable. However, without a grill at Stonewall there is still the question of where to get a great burger ... Hmmm.

As far as not having a working phone number - the "published" phone number was for the pay phone in the back and that was destroyed over a dozen years ago. The phone number for the bar is private and gets given to patrons but not published.

When I do hear any updates, I'll let you know. Ta. MMM!

I thought this thread was about Orange Julius.

It was a store that served this unusual orange concoction. Darn drink was pretty good.
