That's diabolical! ;) 6 PM is really the earliest anyone is supposed to wear black tie, so assuming it's starting earlier than that, by saying "optional," that means the only men who will wear black tie will be in the wedding party or those who happen to own a tux. (and the ones who own a tux will probably look out of date because the style don't last forever ;)
It really depends on the crowd and the dress. A nice cocktail dress or a mid calf dress is safer, but if you have a dress you love and feel great in, wear it and don't worry. Where is the ceremony? At the BPG?
