What do most UK visitors to New York take with them - travellers cheques, cash or credit card. I would imagine it's a combination but what sort of split do you use ?
I don't know what most people bring, but I would not recommend traveler's checques. I would bring your debit card and your credit card. You'll get the best exchange rates, be able to use them everywhere, and not have to hassle with exchanging the checques.
We use a credit card in England. I would think the same would applly in reverse.
The flex account from Nationwide is very popular. Use debit card for getting cash from ATMs with minimal (if any) fees and best exchange rate. Use credit card for big purchases.
As already stated--use credit cards where you can--most places take them other than small stores and your bank card to get cash in ATMs.
I'm taking abou £400 worth of $$$ and any clothing and stuff will go on the credit card......got my $$ from www.travelex.com whom I consistently find have the best rate and you can collect at the airport :)
Personally, I bring a small amount of cash to get me into Manhattan and then use my Nationwide FlexAccount debit card to withdraw cash from ATM's and their credit card for purchases. They don't charge a fee for either of these, or a conversion fee. The machine provider may impose a small fee, but you'll still save as the exchange rate is better.Haven't used travellers cheques for years now.
thanks for the info. I've just taken a look at www.travelex.com and I noticed the Cash Passport. Has anyone used this ?
I cant see the advantage to it over using your ordinary switch card to withdraw cash as travelex, from what I can see/understand, will charge you $4.50 for every withdrawal plus you may get charged the machine operators fee and they charge 2% commission on whatever you put on the card....I think but I stand to be corrected :)
