Day trip away from the City?

We are coming to New York City this week for a long weekend - we've been before and would like to venture further afield (done Woodbury Common) - is there a train journey (1-2 hours long) that would show us a bit of the area outside of New York?

Would like to sit back and just see scenery / houses etc to get a better idea of greater NY. It would be great if there were restaurants / bars / shops at the end but not essential....

Rhinebeck is a popular destination. YOu can take a train from Grand Central to Rhinecliff.

Cold Spring is another popular stop and you can buy a train ticket that includes entry to Boscobel mansion. Here's a link to info on day trips by Metro North train.

There are a number of mansions you can tour north of the city. Some info here

We love the Hamptons (Southhampton in particular) for a day trip, but maybe better to hire a car to see beach etc. I think that you might be able go by bus from the Port Authority.

Philadelphia is about an hour and a half by rail from NYC, and is worth seeing.

If you put "day trip" in the search box, you'll find pages of similar posts with excellent ideas (such as Rhinebeck, Philly, Beacon, West Point, Kuykit, etc...)

Also, newyorkled.com has a nice page on day trips:

But my main question is, have you visited Queens and Brooklyn thoroughly? Specifically, have you seen The Panorama at the Queens Museum?

Sit on the #7 train for a lovely outdoor view of Queens, and visit this hidden gem:

QUEENS! Let's go, Mets! Our largest borough with the craziest streets is home to some of the best and cheapest international food in all of NYC. Take a ride on the elevated #7 train for great views, the U.S. Tennis Open, and communities representing over 100 countries. Don't forget The Panorama!!

YO, WHAT ABOUT BROOKLYN? Fuhggedabouddit! Here's a collection of posts about our "Fourth Largest City in America", where 1 out of 7 Americans can trace their ancestral roots.
