Best spots for meeting people in NYC.

Hi all,

Hoping some of you could shed some light on which bars/clubs/etc are the best to go out to and meet people in!

Am 25yo single female and am fine traveling on my own. On my next visit to NYC (am going in Jan 09) I would love to get out and see more of the nightlife and socialise but obviously don't want to be standing in a club by myself or worse, outside in a line to get in!

Any suggestions or advice? Also any warnings or advice regarding getting in to trendy bars/clubs would be much appreciated.

Thanks! =)

Some of the more popular nightspots right now include Cielo, GoldBar, 1Oak, Tenjune, Temple Bar, 205 Club, The Box, Death and Company, Cain, the Pink Elephant, PM, Hiro, and Guesthouse. Some of those are lounges and some are dance clubs, so be sure to read reviews on www.yelp.com beforehand. Of those, 1Oak is the hardest door; here's an interview with the Tenjune doorman in which he says a little about getting in:

All that said, those places might not really be your scene. It would helpful to know a little more about you--are you into dive bars, alt-rock bars, art bars, club kids, retro bars, etc.?

Thanks for your suggestions Crans. Being from Sydney where the nightlife is limited and generic I didn't even think to offer up what scenes I am into!

I am pretty into most scenes and am always up for new experiences but alt-rock bars, art bars & retro bars all sound pretty good.

By the way, another fun way to meet people is to eat at a communal table or counter. Many restaurants feature them. A few I recall off the top of my head are: Boqueria, Mercer Kitchen, DuMont, Degustation, Momofuku Noodle Bar, Momofuku Ssam, Bread Tribeca, Bar Room at the Modern, Angelika Kitchen, Bar Boulud, Bar Stuzzichini, L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon, Union Square Cafe, Asia de Cuba, Le Pain Quotidien.

Like I said, some of those have counters, some have communal tables. The vary a lot in price, quality, cuisine, etc., so be sure to look at www.menupages.com and www.yelp.com to get a sense of the kind of food they serve, prices, atmosphere, etc.

If you're intersted in politics try Rudy's Bar and Grill on a Thursday night when the Drinking Liberally political networking group are in for their weekly meet. I found them a good friendly crowd who were happy to chat. It's not a trendy bar though.

Meeting people at clubs/bars is soooo blahhh.. good for sex though ;)

I would go to book stores, like there's one on Prince between Lafayette and Mulberry in Soho. Lots of tables and chairs and people sitting alone ;) All you need is some good eye contact and a smile.

I think you can meet plenty of nice people in bars- not everyone is trolling for a hookup. That said, I've actually had the best luck in chatting with people at bars in the afternoon. After around 8PM or so, everywhere is packed and loud.

Which part of town will you be staying in?
