I agree with Kate that the Boathouse should be your top choice. If you can't get in there, maybe try

Fig and Olive (Lexington b/t 62nd and 63rd):

The restaurant BG inside Bergdorf Goodman at 5th & 57-58 st. is very good (but expensive).

There are a number of restaurants inside the Time Warner building at Columbus Circle (several blocks west of Fifth Ave.) Bouchon Bakery is good for sandwiches and salads. Asiate in the Mandarin Oriental hotel is VERY nice, lovely view (35th floor) and they have a cheap prix fixe lunch.

Bottega del Vino is at 59th st. & 5th ave. very nice also a bit pricey.

If you want something more casual/inexpensive, there are a lot of restaurants on 55th & 56 st. between 5th & 6th ave. On 55th is La Bonne Soup for sandwiches and salads and burgers. There's also Sushiya for Japanese on 56 st.

There are hundreds of restaurants just south of Central Park. What sort of food and how much do you want to spend?
