Pastrami sandwich...

Do excuse me if I'm making a hideous faux pas by asking this - but where is the best place to get a pastrami sandwich in NYC?

I know it must come across as a cliche, but I'm absolutely bursting to try one!!! :)

Katz's deli and the Carnegie deli are the 2 most people will mention. Then there's the 2nd ave. deli which isn't on 2nd ave. ;)

Katz's and you don't need table service. Buy at the counter, get a sample, give him a buck, sit down, and you're in pastrami heaven !!

I've been to all 3, and they were all great (I have my favorite but really they were all good).

To me a lot depends on WHERE you are - Carnegie is closer to Times Square/Theater District, Katz is very convenenient if you're going to the Tenement Museum or anyplace else on the LES, 2nd Ave. is close to the Empire State building - so I'd say you can't go wrong with whichever one fits into your sightseeing plans that day.

But they forgot to tell you ... that the pastrami sandwich at Carnegie's will feed a family of four. It's gigantic. Katz's Deli, on the other hand, has a really good Egg Cream!

We love the pastrami at Carnagie Deli also. My dear hubby and I order one and split. I eat a little bit, and he can put the rest down himself. It is so incredibly good. Nothing like it and at least 6 -7 inches thick! hope you enjoy!

Whatever you do, though,

1) do NOT ask for the sandwich on white bread, and

2) do NOT ask to have it with mayonnaise....

Hi Greenwhiteblue - just a question - HOW are you supposed to ask for a pastrami sandwhich? In a roll? In a focacia? Wholemeal bread? :) Good question mrsvall! Also, sorry to hijack this thread, but is pastrami chilli? Or can you have it chilli?
