Is it OK to negotiate with a B&B???

I am looking to book for June of next year and am wondering if you think i might be offending the person if i try and negotiate a better rate than what is offered on the web site? Also do those prices include tax or is that on top of the price?

thanks

you can only ask

June is a long way off - if it were Jan or Feb I would say it was worth a go.

It all depends on the strength of the $

Hello chestermax,

From my experience in dealing and staying with B&B's you will offend.

B&B's are structured in a rigid manner (unlike hotels) they have their expenses noted down to a "T". Also, most B&B's try to hold a standard and set their policies accordingly.

Also the concept of a B&B is that you are staying at a persons home. By negotiating you are to a degree disrecpecting that policy.

However, you can negotiate, but it is in how you world it.

Make a request. If a B&B needs to fill a room for "filling" sake then they will usually offer it at a lower rate.

The best way however is to state that you are on a budget somewhere in your message to them (state a currency window eg. $120.00 - $170.00). This is usually code to a B&B and they will help how they can. They will NOT find this approach offensive.

One thing to note is that a B&B (most time) will leave a room empty just to have the right guests. So being too pushy will be risking loosing a prospective reservation.

Also taxes are usually not included in the price. But, prior to securing that booking you will be quoted the amount with taxes.

Thank you for that NYCforever, i was asked what my budget was and not really knowing what i could ask for i gave them a counter offer "in the spirit of negotiation" and haven't heard back since. Anyway, next time i will know if i don't hear back in the next week or so. Thanks again for the info.;

Personally, I see no problem with trying to get a better price! Hey, people do it ( and some suceed) in stores, so why not with a B&B. I also find it interesting that THEY asked you what your budget was. Sounds to me like they do NOT have a firm price but are trying to see how much they can get from each customer. If asked that question again, I would indicate that it is flexible and if they quote their charge to me, I can decide if it is something I can handle. I am very nervous of telling someone what I can spend.

"i was asked what my budget was"

Was that after you asked if they would lower the price or when you were booking b/c no price was given? I'd be curious to know exactly how the exchange went. If the b & b posts a price on the website and you asked if they could lower the price, how much lower than quoted price did you request?

I first asked if the price was negotiable then the B&B asked what my budget was, they quoted me $10 below the listed price. As i like to bargain i then went lower and haven't heard from them since LOL.

Sorry nywhiz i only answered some of your question, i think in total i requested approx $22 off the original listed price, i did say it was in the spirit of negotiation so i was fully expecting them to come back with a counter offer.

I don't know what percentage of the price that $22 represents, but it sounds like you pushed too far. There are plenty of other options.
