The Beacon is a fine hotel in an excellent location. Have you read the reviews here at TA? Many of them are from first-time visitors who were quite pleased, and reading them will give you a good idea of what's in the immediate neighborhood, etc.

And benji55, you will love being able to walk a short distance to the subway (you can actually enter at 73rd and Bway so it is just a block and a half from the hotel) and access the local and express trains (#1, #2 and #3).....your trip to Times Square can be as little as five minutes on the Express...and of course you can change there for just about any other train.....but when you return to your neighborhood you will feel like it is really New York and where New Yorkers live (unlike Times Square, for example)
