Need Lodging Suggestions for Family of 5

Could someone suggest a hotel or a reputable apartment rental agency for a 4-5 night stay in August? We'd love to be in an quieter area where we could walk to restaurants and shops, yet be close to public transit.

What is your budget, what are your specific dates, and what do you plan to see?

Short-term apartment rentals are illegal here, so you'll need a hotel.

Also, what sort of bed situation are you asking for? Five people of what ages in how many beds?

The Embassy Suites in downtown Manhattan/financial district will sleep 5 if everyone shares a bed. It's all 1 bedroom suites and you can get one with 2 double beds and a sofabed. It's a quiet area on weekends but more and more people are living there. It's right near Battery Park and the Hudson River. It's also near the ferry to the Statue of Liberty, Chinatown, Soho, Tribeca.

is another suite hotel but uptown on the upper west side near the Museum of Natural History and Central Park. A very family friendly area and they also have 1 bedroom suites with 2 beds and sofabed.

If you want more than 1 bedroom, the Eastgate Tower, one of the Affinia.com hotels has some 2 bedroom/2 bathroom suites. It's in midtown in a combo business/residential area. Not as fresh as the first 2 but well run and clean. They also own the Shelburne Murray Hill hotel nearby. It doesn't have 2 bedroom suites but some of their 1 bedrooms have 2 full bathrooms.

Special deal at the Eastgate Tower via Travelzoo. The discount code will work on any of their units even though this announcement doesn't indicate that; a 1-bedroom suite will be $149/night, a 2-BR, 2 bathroom suite will be $199/night; either of these will have a kitchen as well.

The Hotel Beacon does have some 2-bedroom suites with a fully equipped, compact kitchen, but you will need to call the hotel directly about those; they are not included in the online reservations system.

When our friends came from Holland, they were looking for an affordable place for their family of 5 as well.

I recommended, and they ended up staying at, Eve's Bed & Breakfast in Brooklyn. They have a large apartment (the entire 2nd floor of an older home on a tree lined residential street) and give special family rates. They include breakfast foods and snacks in the rate. The furnishings were a little "old ladyish" but they said that the hostess was amazingly friendly and helpful, it was very clean and quiet for sleeping. The subway to Manhattan was a couple of blocks away. It is a safe area to stay in.

Maybe you want to consider this place. Here's a link to their site.....

I guess I should add that we're 2 adults and 3 kids ages 8-10. We'll be doing the whole city from Statue of Liberty to Central Park.

We stayed out in New Jersey at: www.vrbo.com/183905 when we drove down (our main issue was finding somewhere to park easily and leave the car). It was near transportation and restaurants, but not in the New York city at all so it was definitely a big trade-off for us. I've been back since with just my husband and stayed in Manhattan, which was great, but it just worked better with the family to rent something and have a little more space for the kids.
