Broadway tickets at tkts?

We (a family of 4 with 2 teens) are heading to NYC for a week in August and would like to see a Broadway musical. Reading through the posts there seems to be discount tickets available at tkts booths the day of the show. Should we go this route or buy them through the discounted sites online? We would like to pay less than $50 a ticket and really don't mind which show - definitely a musical with a nice set - Wicked, The Little Mermaid, Shrek, Mary Poppins, Mama Mia, The Lion King, South Pacific Etc. Any advice?

We always buy them in advance using a site like www.broadwaybox.com because we can't stand waiting in line at TKTS. The advantage of TKTS, however, is that they're a little bit cheaper than online. So you need to decide whether your money or your time is more valuable.

By the way, Wicked, The Lion King, and South Pacific will not have discounts--those shows regularly sell out.

You also may get a better selection of seats if you break up your party of 4 into 2 and 2... most people reject this idea at first but you should not be talking during the show anyway so give it some thought.

We did this when there in June. I waited in line while the rest of the family walked around Times Square. The lines start forming around 1:30, they list the available shows at 2:30 and window opens at 3. We got great seats, 4 together for the Little Mermaid for $62.50, I think that will be the cheapest you will find. They won't have Wicked or Lion King.

You should check out tdf.org for info, and also a list of what shows were avaialble the preceding week. As others have said, Wicked, lion king, south pacific won't be avaialble at tkts

Crans and everyone else - just wanted to say while TKTS seats may be a couple of dollars less, $5-7 or so, the hassle of waiting in line is not worth the savings.

We also buy our tickets in advance from broadwaybox or theatermania.com.

We used to be TKTS regulars but waiting for an hour or two in line gets old, really fast.

Check the online sites - you'll be glad you did.

The TKTS booth downtown at South Street Seaport isn't very crowded. There tends to be a line right when they open and maybe through lunch hour but it moves quickly. If you happen to be downtown, it is a viable alternative to the Times Sq. madness. But I agree if you already know what you want to see then use www.broadwaybox.com.

Also South Pacific has been at the downtown booth (or the brooklyn booth--I get a list that includes both) for 30% off lately.

For Example from Friday from the TKTS downtown/brooklyn booth offerings:

** 9 TO 5

** Avenue Q - 40% EVE / 40% MAT

** Blithe Spirit - 40% EVE / 40% MAT

** Chicago - 40% EVE

** Hair- 30% EVE / 30% MAT

In the Heights - 30% EVE

** Mary Poppins- 40% MAT

** Mary Stuart

** Rock of Ages - 30 % EVE / 30% MAT

** Shrek

** SOUTH PACIFIC - 30% EVE / 20% MAT

** THE 39 steps

** THE Little Mermaid - 30% MAT

** Phantom - 30% EVE

According to www.broadwaybox.com, you can also print their discounts and take them directly to the Theatre box office to purchase your tickets. That way you can be more flexible with your itinerary plus save $7-$10 per ticket in handling fees.

Thank you all for your guidance. I have been looking at the reviews on playbill.com and seems like we can't go wrong with most any broadway show. THANK YOU!
