3 night get away from new york city

We are spending 5 nights in new york in august. Looking for an excursion away for 3 nights - possible to rhode island to experience the sea, beaches, lighthouses, etc. We like quiet, easy travel. We are open to a rail trip to the destination and then rent a car or just walk once there. Any suggestions for us?

Newport Rhode Island is always a good take with lots to do and it gives you access to beaches also... You can take a train there and then rent a car or not depending on what you want to do.. August is high prime season though for anything to do with the ocean. As long as you understand that there are lots that you can get to in a relatively short period of time.

Given your criteria, Newport would be at the top of my list, too. Train travel to Providence RI is really easy from NYC, but I don't know if you can get to Newport directly by train (AMTRAK from Penn Station). You might need to rent a car in Providence to get to Newport .It is a short drive (maybe 30-45 minutes?). Or maybe there is a bus from Providence. There are many charming B&B's in Newport, amazingly lavish historic mansions to tour, beautiful seascapes, etc. For a very special (and $$$$) dinner, the Inn at Castle Hill has gorgeous ocean sunset views, but there are also more moderately priced spots. And in Providence itself, the Federal Hill area has some terrific restaurants, Providence Place is a very nice mall if you want to do that kind of shopping (Newport itself has lots of cute shops), and depending on when you are there Providence has an event called Waterfire along its river some summer nights (check the internet for details and dates). Newport is a very popular resort, so do make sure to make your hotel reservations ASAP.

BTW, I hope you mean you are going to be in the NYC area for a total of 8 nights (5 NYC and 3 Newport). Otherwise you are looking at just 2 nights in NYC -- if you haven't visited before, I would spend the 3 nights in NYC and 2 in Newport.

A seasonal, water taxi service between Providence & Newport was to have launched last month, but it's not yet up and running.

So, it would probably be best to take the train to Kingston (closer to Newport than Providence) and then a bus or car service to Newport. Then again, you might enjoy spending several hours in Providence before continuing onto Newport. Note that the linked page below gives you info: re Amtrak discount for the train portion of your trip.
