Birthday for mixed group Ideas

Hello! I've tried the search option and havent really found what I'm looking for so I figured I would try here. I'm celebrating my 23rd birthday in NYC in sept. There's a mixed group, about 6 people in their mid-twenties, and my mom and some of her friends who are in their mid-forties. I want to do a fun but nice dinner one night probably for $50 or less per person, and then go out to a loungy type place with good music, and then do another fun dinner the second night. We have our days mapped out its just the evenings where we're clueless. We're staying at the Affinia Shelburne, but will travel anywhere. Thanks

Oh sorry. I totally missed that part didnt i? We're really very open to any suggestions. We dont have any picky eaters or vegetarians in the group so we're pretty much just looking for good atmosphere and good food & drinks.

Thank you :0)

A lot will depend on whether that $50 includes alcohol or not. If you want it to include alcohol, you should look at ethnic places like Indian, Thai, Chinese where prices are low but good for group dining and tasty food.

menupages.com

is a good place to start.

Another idea is to head to Brooklyn (by subway) where prices are often cheaper but food is getting better and better. There's a Thai called Sea in Brooklyn that's very good. Here's one of many posts on Brooklyn restaurants and there should be plenty of places with music too.

I agree with Whiz that if $50 includes drinks, that changes things considerably. If it *doesn't* include drinks, then you might think about something like Alta, which is a tapas place good for groups:

Followed by drinks at Little Branch:

or Pegu Club:

Just a suggestion;

Get off the island of Manhattan and head to 'My Moon' in Williamsburg in Brooklyn for Turkish Mediterranean cuisine. There both an outdoor courtyard space and indoor dining rooms that I think is ideal for a small party. The first time I saw the outdoor space kind of reminded me of a Turkish herem with these small intimate private areas. Inside there are long tables with Arabic light fixtures. It's a very cool 'sexy' space for a small party.

I know that I am going to take a lot of flak for this (putting on my bullet-proof vest as I type), but many women's birthday parties and bachelorette parties are celebrated at Mangia e Bevi (9th Ave and 53rd Street). Believe me, it is not a place one would choose for the food or service. You go for the "atmosphere" -- spontaneous dancing, tambourines -- go to their website, check out the photos,menu,etc. and you will see what I mean. It should be within your price range (depending on alcohol consumption). I think it's a place "all the girls" in your age groups could enjoy. Definitely "different" than just another casual Italian dinner. Check out the New York Magazine review, too.

Before the attacks on me begin , let me repeat --

Not a place for "foodies". Very casual. Service can be less than stellar. Not a quiet place. "Tourist trap" ?-- most diners will be "locals". But it can be a lot of fun.

Happy Birthday !

Would Le Zie work? They did a nice job with our group of 7-8 in April. Decent Italian (don't order their award winning spaghetti and meatballs; they wouldn't win an award in our house), but everything else was great. Def. in the budget.

Buenos Aires in the Village has great steak and a lively atmosphere and they'll put tables together for larger groups (call ahead. no reservations but it would be nice to give them the 'heads up' about your group size).
