is there any dress code for the theater in NYC??
never been to broadway before.
going to watch wicked at the gershwin
Casual clothing is OK. No need to get all gussied up anymore.
There isn't a defined dress code as such, most UK people verge on casual to smart casual. If you have been out sight seeing all day its quite normal to continue straight to the theatre, some people however like to return to hotel room and wash/change, and then make a night of it as such. Either way you wont look out of place.
While there will be people there in jeans, and even (horrors) in shorts and flip flops, business casual, or "smart casual," is the more appropriate option.
The most important thing, IMO, is to be clean and quiet. I would much rather sit next to someone in shorts and flip-flops who is clean and quiet than someone in an evening gown who is drenched in perfume and talks throughout the play!
Well said, SueFee!
mollythecat, here's our Theater Info Page (from our FAQ "pushpin" at the top of this forum.)
Towards the bottom is a list of helpful hints, such as turning off the mobile phone and leaving your shopping purchases in your hotel room.
Pssst... some of us still "get gussied up".
Not meaning evening gowns, but yep, I'll wear "a little black dress" or a cocktail suit for an evening performance, and I don't think I've ever worn anything but business (or "smart") casual to a matinee. So if you'd like to mark your own Broadway debut by wearing something a little special, feel free, you won't be alone :-)
cheers all for your replies.
hey pauline, enjoy your trip and be sure to let us know how it went.

Is it usually a little chilly inside the theater?
