This isn't strictly a new York question, so please forgive me, but I have a general question I don't know where else to ask. My teenage daughters and I are flying into EWR on a Saturday in July. The plan is to be at New Haven on the following Monday, Providence and Cambridge on Tuesday, Ithaca on Wednesday, then back to EWR to drop off the car on Thursday. Then we'll spend 5 glorious days in New York, during which time my daughter will visit NYU and Columbia. My question is where would be a good place to got to hang out for a day after we pick up our rental car? Somewhere between Newark and New Haven. Maybe near a nice beach? Also, I grew up in Corona, but left NYC in '79. The last time we visited NYC we just saw the touristy things (which I never got to see when I was living there). Now I think I'd like to go back to queens to see the old homestead. I lived around Junction Blvd and 50th Ave. It was an area on the downhill slide in 1979. Can anybody give me an idea what the neighborhood is like now? Thanks in advance!
