None of the shuttles are recommended here--- they give very bad service like waiting for a full shuttle to go in and maybe having to go to many stops before your hotel... The preferred low cost solution is the Air Train to to either the Subway or Long Island Railway to Penn station depending on where you are going... the other way is cab which is a flat fee of $45 plus tolls and tip or private limo for about the same

Here's a link to the Port Authority page (they operate our airports) that shows your options. I would recommend the Newark Liberty Express Bus into Manhattan, and then the New York Airport Service Express Bus to JFK.

While a yellow taxi charges a flat rate of $45 (plus tip and toll, or around $60) between Manhattan and JFK, it's a bit more between Manhattan and Newark. I don't know what the taxi fare would be between the two airports, but I would guess around $100.

Both airports have access to public transportation through Penn Station, so you can get the Newark AirTrain to the New Jersey Transit line at Newark Airport Station, and take that to New York's Penn Station. At Penn Station you get a Long Island RailRoad train to Jamaica, and get the JFK AirTrain there. Total Trip cost is under $30 per person, and potentially less on weekends.

Just don't get confused there are actually two (2)Penn Stations:

1)Newark Penn Station

and2) New York Penn Station.

From Newark Airport

1. (It used to be a bus, but maybe there is a train now as stated above, ask at the airport) Shuttle to to Newark Penn Staion.

2. New Jersey Transit (NJT) train from Newark Penn station to New York Penn Station.(get out and find LIRR)

3. Long Island Rail road (LIRR) train from New York Penn Station to Jamacia, Queens(Look for Airtran signs).

4. JFK shuttle train (Airtran)from Jamacia, Queens to the JFK airport

Do the reverse from JFK to Newark (I agree it should be easier) and "yes" this is the most cost efficient way.
