What's all the fuss about Zara?

Could someone please explain what all the fuss about Zara is? My daughters were in Europe last year and they are beside themselves to visit the Zara stores when we come in September. I love fashion and are these stores worth all the fuss?

Zara in New York?

i think they are more expensive than the ones in Europe.

i live in Europe and sometimes shop from Zara because they are not expensive.

but i believe being in NY you can find much better clothes in better prices.

Not to do with NY, but your girls may be excited to learn that Zara (along with GAP) is opening in Australia soon. Not sure if the first store is in Sydney or Melbourne

I hope they open in Melbourne but I have a feeling their first store will be in Sydney.

They make cheap versions of designer clothes, so people of a certain age love them! I remember when we got our first Zara store - all the assistants in my office went crazy.

H & M does the same. Topshop is from the UK and has a store here too. Uniqlo is another. Perhaps if you visit the websites of these retailers you'd see what the fuss is about.

Zara's niche is designer styles at mid-tier prices. Their quality is usually quite decent and styles are pretty good, too.

Uniqlo is a Japanese brand and they make budget casual clothing with good quality. From a styling perspective, it's not as innovative as Zara. Prices are cheap though. I bought some polo shirts recently from US$10 to $20 that are probably better quality than what I could get from bigger brands.

H&M has good styles but I think their quality is seriously lacking. The fabric just doesn't feel good in my opinion.

I believe in Melbourne a Gap store will be openning at Chadstone around October, while Zara in 2011.

I have been to Zara in Singapore, and Paris. And I love Zara!.

The clothes are really good value and good quality too.

I am not sure what NYC Zara stores are like, but I will definately having a look.

H&M too. The sales in Paris last year were amazing. My favourite work shirt was bought from H&M and it is the best one I have, and it only cost me 11 euros!!!!!

Listen to your daughters - they know what they are talking about:)

In case somebody doesn't know, Zara is a Spanish company specialised in doing good copies of designers' clothes. In fact some copies are so good that are considered better than the originals!!!

Also they change their clothes every week so if you see something, you better grab it or it might not be there next time. This way of doing business was really a revolution some years ago. Zara's case is studied in Harvard University. Their shops are exactly the same everywhere in the world. They don't do franchising. The way clothes are disposed in the store is exactly the same everywhere too and employees are carefully trained.

Hasn't All Saints (another UK clothing chain) just opened a store in SoHo, that really targets the TopShop crowd, making more stylish clothes etc...
