Beach vaction near New York City

We are visiting NYC in summer and would like to spend 1-2 weeks near a beach suitable for young children, preferably in a rental property. We are looking for a pretty rather than commercialised place, small town rather than city. We have looked at Shelter Island and The Hamptons but worry that eating out will be very expensive. Any ideas on location ideally an easy drive from JFK and eating out costs in these areas.

Appreciate any help you can offer.

Are you saying you want to be able to do both the city and the beach at the same time or some time in the city and then 1-2 weeks at the beach or base your selves near a beach for day trips into the city . What is the length of your total holiday ?

Hola.

We know many folks who live at the beach AND in NYC during the warmer months and they commute back and forth (some) on a daily basis. We live on Fire Island (FI) and in NYC and commute quite often. For us the trip from FI is by ferry and then the LIRR into the City and it takes about 2 hours from dock to Penn Station (34th Street & 7th Avenue).

We might recommend for you and your family a village on FI like Ocean Beach where there are many families and kids; the restaurants prices there are also quite reasonable. For more information, see:

Hope this helps. Your questions are always welcome.

Please don't consider commuting from Fire Island into the city---- unless it is a one time deal.

Hey MARJOH:-) You may want to take a look at some of the Jersey Shore areas..Avon and Spring Lake come to mind considering you're looking for something 'small town' by the beach;-) Do bear in mind though that most places will be busy regardless since it is the Summer;-) As far as eating out expenses..if you're looking for a rental it would come w/a kitchen so you would have the option to cook there as well saving you a few bucks! Happy planning and ENjoY!

You may want to consider Ocean City, New Jersey about a 2 hour 30 minute drive from Manhattan

While some people seem to have very favorable experiences at the Jersey Shore, I've had nothing but disappointment with every aspect of the Jersey Shore - from the restaurants to the accommodations to various charges for access to the beaches and wanting to walk between towns on the beach.

Fire Island is absolutely delightful and is a world away.

There aren't any cars on Fire Island so that is a cost savings in itself. Ferries make Fire Island easily accessible from New York City and JFK. The Long Island Rail Road connects New York City with the ferries. The JFK AirTrain connects the airport with the LIRR. It is all extremely easy and very well coordinated.

Fire Island is a series of communities - each very different and very unique. Ocean Beach has the most restaurants and places to stay.

First of all, I am biased, as I met my wife in a share house in Ocean Beach, Fire Island. You park the car at the ferry and leave it there, as it is not needed on the island. From there, it is all walking and bicycling that gets you places. Lots of folks have wagons to help them with supplies. This is a true beach vacation, as there is little to do besides hanging out and swimming.

The Hamptons do offer more to do along with some magnificent beaches -my favorite is Fowler Beach in Southampton. But yes, the Hamptons are quite pricy. You could check out places in Hampton Bays which is somewhat less tony. My wife and I used to call it Least Hampton.

Not a fan of the Jersey Shore.

One more thing. While you are in NYC, you can always take the subway to Coney Island or Brighton Beach. Great people watching, great food and great rides as well.

If you rent a house, why would you need to eat out? Last I checked, rentals come with kitchens. The expense you need to be worried about is the cost of the rental. Food would be incidental. How much are you prepared to pay for the rental? Decent houses in the NYC area in summer are pricey and many prefer longer rentals than 2 weeks. When are you visiting and what's your weekly budget for a rental?

..then you certainly won't need the car rental while you're in the City so no need to pick it up right away at JFK..you can rent locally returning it either to wherever you picked it up (if you're returning to the City on the return) or the airport if you're heading out ..most rental agencies have offices at the airports..just make sure to check when you rent;-) Happy planning...keep enjoyin'!
