May be a silly question..why is October an expensive month t

Hi all, somewhat of a foolish question...we are thinking of visiting New York in October, and from the good advice given here, I can see that it may be an expensive undertaking.Unfortunately, that's when we have available holidays, so we will probably go ahead.(Can't wait!)

Could someone please enlighten me as to why October is so popular? Is it holiday time there? Is it a particularly beautiful time of year?Is it (please!) sale time in all the designer shops? Thanks for the help!

Good weather, lots of business being done, festivals (Tribeca film festival, New Yorker weekend, conventions). In general, things that fill hotels. Here's a smattering of what went on last year

The Whiz pointed out various reasons why October would be expensive. Unfortunately, most of the other months will be expensive as well. The bad news is that lodging in NYC is quite expensive. Look online for discounts and look at TA reviews to make sure you want to stay there. A filthy hotel is not worth the discount.

The good news is that once the flight and hotel are taken care of, there is lots to do in NYC for little money. Many museums have free days or suggested admissions. Great food can be purchased cheaply from trucks, small local restaurants and ethnic places. Free stuff like the Brooklyn Bridge and Staten Island Ferry are iconic to NY. And of course, walking in a great area is always free.

I think Whiz means the New York Film Festival, not the Tribeca Film Festival, which is in late April/early May.

Autumn is traditionally the 'season' in New York, as people return from summer breaks and cultural institutions begin their new programming schedules.

October also tends to have very nice weather - not hot and sticky like summer, but no freezing cold temperatures to drive you indoors, either. There can be a little crispness in the air that puts an extra bit of liveliness in your step. The trees are not bare yet, and from mid-October on, the leaves are changing color before they fall, which is a fine sight.

It's really pretty here in October. Nicest weather of the year.
