Christmas Holiday 5th Ave Walk

We were in NYC last summer for the first time and fell in love with the city. We have decided to come back for the Macys Parade and are wondering if 5th Ave will have Christmas holiday window displays out at that early? Since it will be cold weather, we have thought about walking down 5th Ave and are wondering if it will be a long cold walk or should we do a bus tour. We'd prefer to walk so that we can take our time but are concerned that it will be too long and cold.

In addition, we picked up somewhere that Grand Central Station does a lazer show on the ceiling but we can't find the date of when it starts and at what hours.

Most of the decorations should be up by Thanksgiving. Assuming you are planning this walk on a shopping day, as opposed to Thanksgiving itself, you will have tons of stores that you can duck into to warm up if necessary. I don't know if you can find a bus tour that covers this specific subject, but I would advise walking in any event. Besides, you may end up with a lovely, warm day, not that I would count on it.

Thanksgiving isn't usually a time of bitter cold; historic daytime average for that week is 40 degrees Fahrenheit. You'll see more on foot than on any bus tour, which will be reduced to inching along the gridlocked streets during that T-Day weekend (a bus won't be able to park in front of, say, Saks to let you out & wait for you to gaze at the windows and climb back on). Here's a map that someone put together re: stores' holiday window displays:

There wasn't a holiday laser lights-and-music show at Grand Central Terminal in 2010 (and the 2009 one was a more modest affair); the Metropolitan Transportation Authority couldn't find a sponsor willing to foot the bill. Perhaps it will return this year.

Some of the windows aren't unveiled til after Thanksgiving.
