Hotels, hotels, hotels: where to stay?

Hi all,

My roomate and I were planning on travelling to NY for the first time sometime during the last week of August. We're both students, so our budget is lower (around 150, possible 200). We're looking at hostels right now, but how would it be possible to get a nice hotel room if we were to go farther out? We're planning on a fair bit of shopping, with some Broadway and musuem visits and a little nightlife, and want to stay fairly close to that type of area.

I recommend staying at the west side YMCA or at Big Apple Hostel in a private room. Both places you share a bath, however, the price is way below your budget.

If you're willing to share a queen or king bed, you should be able to find a room at a NICE hotel at the end of August within your budget assuming at least 1 or you is 21 or older. (some hotels won't accept under 21's). Tight now on quikbook.com there are 3 secret sale hotels (you don't get the name but the star level and area and can sometimes figure out what it is) form $139-150/night plus tax (adds ~ 15%) but they're all for queen beds. The areas are Murray Hill & Times Square. The new Yotel in Times Square is also there for a queen with cont. breakfast for $149. I used the dates Aug 24-28 but those rates also hold for a longer stay. If you're interested in any of the secret sale hotels, you can try to figure out which hotels they are by comparing star level/area and listed hotel amenities with those listed for the hotels on quikbook. All these options do require prepayment and they're not cancelable.

What specific dates? How old are you? We can give more specific suggestions knowing your dates since prices vary.

Also, does $150-200 include shows and shopping or is that hotel budget per night for both of you together?

For dates, we're looking at August the 21-27. And we're both over 21, so no age restrictions there. The 150-200 is just the hotel budget, shows and shopping are seperate. And thanks for all the advice!
