East 35th Street pier

Coming into the city for the day via SeaStreak. What is there within walking distance or a short bus ride of the pier for sightseeing? I'm not that familiar with the area so please give specifics. Thanks!

You can answer this yourself by mapping the location on

maps.google.com

and then using the search nearby feature looking for whatever you want (or tourist sites). The UN building is about 8 blocks north. You can get the 34 st. crosstown bus and be at the Empire State building or Macy's in short order. The Morgan Library isn't far. Grand Central Terminal is not far.

The area is known as Murray Hill. What's right there is NYU Medical Center. Or walk to the subway stop at 33 st. and head anywhere you want north or south.

I will warn you, the spot when the ferry stops is right under the FDR Drive so there's a lot of traffic whizzing by but there is a traffic light to let you cross. You can also usually find lots of taxis there. Have a look at the street view on google maps. Where would you like to go?

There's also a crosstown bus that heads to Port Authority that would get you closer to Times Square and Bryant Park.

This puts you in my neck of the woods.

To get a rough idea of distances, a street block in midtown NYC is 1/20 of a mile and an avenue block averages about 1/6 of a mile. You can either get the 34th St. crosstown bus just south of the pier or walk about 3/4 of a mile to the Empire State Building at Fifth Ave. & 34th St. (buy tickets in advance online). Other things to see and do nearby include the Morgan Library & Museum on Madison Ave. and 37th St., Grand Central Station at Park Ave. & 42nd St., NY Public Library at Fifth Ave. & 42nd St., the UN at First Ave. & 42nd St. I recommend checking on tours, exhibits, and tickets online. This is an easily walkable circuit.

A couple interesting dining options: walking west across 32nd St. from 5th Ave. and getting authentic Korean bbq; or going south on Lexington Ave. from 34th St. to around 28th St. to get authentic Indian food (the dosas at Chennai Garden are my favorites).

I hope this gives you some ideas.
