All NYC yellow cabs are outfitted with credit card machines. Occasionally a driver will lie and say it isn't working. If that happens, tell them that you'll just have to go without paying the fare. They'll get it working pretty quickly.

That doesn't happen often. I wouldn't worry about it.

They take both, but taxis are cheap and cash is easier.

Taxi cabs in NYC are now fully air conditioned, are smoke (cigarette/cigar) free and even feature an 8-inch LCD television with an interactive touchscreen GPS map! During your ride, you can view the map, or watch local news. Passengers can even adjust rear-seat air conditioning outlets and fan/blower speed of the rear seat air conditioning.

At the end of your ride, the LCD television screen clears and asks how you intend to pay - cash or debit/credit card. If you select debit/credit, the screen then presents to you a touch pad indicating the fare plus gratuity options. The system calculates for you 10, 15 and 20% gratuities. A 0-9 digit touch pad is available for you to enter any amount of gratuity. (Be aware, most drivers pay around $200 per day to the owner of the cab; the driver has 12 hours to make his daily money. Drivers need to earn at least $400 gross for the day, from this they extract money for gasoline and any parking).

Once you enter your gratuity, the system adds the total and then you can slide your credit/debit card in the card reader device. Some cards also feature a "RF" chip; for these devices you only need touch the reading device. The meter, located on the car's dashboard, begins to print a receipt, which you should the driver to give to you.

You're then done. I hope that explains things to you clearly!

Some notes on NYC transport:

Unlike most places you can't call taxi cabs in Manhattan, only street hails. So for transport to the airport I'd suggest perbooking a car service.

Durring rush hours and after theater shows it is often difficult to get a taxi.

The subway runs 24/7/365 and is quick, cheap, and safe.
