Please help as I am a little confussed. Tipping in restaurants...is the minimum 10% or 15%? I was told by my travel consultant 10% but on the FAQ it now seems to be 15%. Im not being a tight a#$, just want 2 know the "rules".

The tipping guide in the FAQ section is accurate and was last updated in January this year. You will also find several recent threads about this topic if you search this forum. Here are some:

Your travel agent needs to be brought up to speed.

I can't even remember when 10 percent was acceptable.

15 percent is low end; 20 percent is higher end.

It seems it is preferred to tip in cash; quite different from how I tip at home. Hope you bought some money last week. It's gone back to $1.04 tonight.

Tipping in NYC restaurants is very easy. The tax is 8.25%. When you get your bill, the amount of the tax is always listed separately. Just double the tax and round up, a perfect tip every time.

We agree with Mel and usually use the “double the tax and round-up” method, though we always tip the piano player or mariachis separately. :))

I've lived in New York most of my life and have always thought 10% to be more than fair. I think anything more should be reserved for particularly outstanding service.
