Collection of trip reports from families with TEENAGERS!!

Some of these are plain hysterical, some are adorably sweet. Especially moving to read about the awe and fascination in the eyes of the kids. Good for you, oh parents, for schlepping the little miscreants!

dear queensboulevard,

I dont know if you'll be able to answer this one for me but I'll ask you anyway.

mY 15 year old daughter and I are coming to NY at the end of March, she wants to dress up in the evening, and I wondered if she would be allowed in any of the bars or lounges with me to have a non alcoholic drink.

We havent got a huge budget and cant afford to go to a fancy restaurant so I'm not really sure where I can take her in her fancy clothes. Can you help please.

As a general rule (there are exceptions) the law in New York forbids the presence in bars of persons under the age of 16 unless they are accompanied by their parents. Since they will be with you, their presence is not forbidden by the law -- but the individual establishment may have rules of its own, and you would be wise to check ahead of time.

Sometimes, bars are more restrictive if they do not serve food.

Don't worry about spending a lot of money to dress up. Jeans and nice shoes are fine (I'd avoid sneakers/trainers). It's more important to be neat than super-stylish. If no ideas pop in your head, just wear black.

skye...I'm not sure where you are staying, but the Marriott Marquis in Times Square has a lounge (Encore lounge) with windows overlooking Times Square. They have a glass elevator you can take up to the lounge, and it looks very nice. You could get a drink and maybe an appetizer. If you are there before the theatre lets out, you could probably get a table by the window. She would probably be in awe of all of the lights!

Dear porchparty,

That sounds fantastic, just the sort of thing i'm looking for. My daughter is a very mature 15 year old going on 25 and wants to dress up and go to sophisticated places. I think she would love that. Were staying at the Barclay Intercontinental by the way so thats not too far away.
