Our favorites are all very unassuming places:

El Paso Taqueria:

Tlaxcalli:

Cafe el Portal:

Matamoros:

We also think all of the following are pretty good, though they're pricier:

Hell's Kitchen:

Zarela:

Toloache:

Didnt Zarela close Crans?

I was at Nixtamal last week - still my favorite. People at that dinner reco'd Itzocan - I still havent been.

Also, I still havent been, but I notice a lot of places with the tacos al pastor on the trompo (gyro-like spit) like they do them in Mexico City and Puebla, on E 116th. Probably the places on your list above on 116th

Hola.

We (also) live in Mexico and when we are in NYC and not cooking at home we like to head for the nearby Rosa Mexicano restaurant (there are various locations in the City) but we prefer the one in the Union Square area at 9 E.18th St between Fifth Ave & Broadway. The food and drinks here are authentic, especially the various moles (sauces), and the grilled or roasted meats are exquisite. For more information see:

Hope this helps. Your questions are always welcome.

Abrazos,

Matt

Wow, some great options, but let me add a couple more.

For the pricey list, I always opted for Maya over Rosa Mexicano or Zarela.

I like their food and attitude better than Rosa's or Zarela's.

Maz Mezcal is a somewhat less expensive restaurant that I like. Their website is a little annoying to use, but here it is

another good one is my neighborhood Salsa y Salsa - very authentic

Then, there's Suenos and Crema - 2 "gourmet" Mexican type places in Chelsea.

Having gone to cooking school in Mexico, I can turn out pretty much anything on the Rosas or Dos Caminos menu from my kitchen (although mole makes the whole apartment smell for weeks); that's why I lean toward the simple, elegant tacos al pastor that I cannot make at home!
