Broadway show for teenage boy?

I am looking for a broadway show that my 16-year old son will enjoy on his first trip to NY the week before Christmas. I am leaning towards Spiderman, but am hesitant because of the varied reviews. The reviews do seems better since this summer, but would love some feedback. Or The Book of Morman (he does like South Park)? But I am not sure the plot would be appealing to him. Any other suggestions?

Rock of Ages sounded good until I read that it may not be age appropriate. I considered Blue Man Group, but I really want him to experience a true Broadway musical. When searching previous posts, most of what I found for reccommendations for teenage boys is outdated (for example, many suggestions were for Spamalot).

My daughters and I have seen Wicked and The Lion King, so we don't want to see those. Thanks in advance for you feedback! I know that I can always count on everyone at TA for help!

Book of Mormon will be impossible to get a ticket anyway, so don't worry about whether it's appropriate (probably not) just forget it.

I think Spiderman is your best bet. Rock of Ages might be good and there's also Godspell. Daniel Radcliffe is in "How to Succeed..." which has made it popular with teens, but it's probably not the best story line for him and it may be difficult to get tickets since Radcliffe is leaving at the end of the year. There's also Billy Elliot which is due to close in Jan., but not sure it's as good for a kid from Houston as these other options.

Without a doubt, go see "Avenue Q" !!!

It's South Park meets Sesame Street! Live puppet nudity! Not to mention, discounts are always available.

Avenue Q deals with mature subjects such as racism, image and porn. If your son can handle simulated muppet sex, he will absolutely love this show. It is a real laugh riot.

Another thing that I would highly recommend is the interactive Fuerza Bruta, which is playing in a theatre near Union Square. This show is a combination light show, rave and anger management class all rolled into one. It is truly an amazing spectacle.

my tastes are similar to a teenager my wife keeps telling me--we just saw War Horses and Milliion dollar quartet---both are very good, million dollar is totally musical in a very small theater--we had tickets in 1 st row--really good. We've seen Rock of ages too, slightly more colorful language, and some double meaning verbage, but basicall clean fun

I have seen both Spiderman and Billy Elliot and would recommend both for a teenager. Billy Elliot has better plot and music, Spiderman is more "spectacular."

I have a 16 year old son and we have had the chance to see a number of shows on Broadway. I would say Spiderman is your best bet. We saw the old version with my son and he thoroughly enjoyed it even though that version had a very difficult plot to understand. I hear that the revamped Spiderman is much better. It is truly a spectacular show...the aerobatics are unsurpassed. Even though Bono wrote the music, I did not leave the theater humming any of the songs. It isn't that kind of show. It is, again, spectacular...

I want to comment on Billy Elliot. I saw it in London with my daughter. The plot involves a boy who loves dance but his father wants him to wrestle instead. You follow the story of this boy, his challenges with his father and his father's challenges with his choices, then the acceptance of each other. The language is very strong. It is an uplifting story but...the one part that would definitely make my son uncomfortable is the cross-dressing and the young boys kissing each other. While my son is quite liberally minded, at his age he seems to be embarrassed by so much. I am not sure he would be comfortable sitting with me watching that part of the show. Just my feedback...he is a good kid who is accepting of others but he would not want to sit with me and watch that.

Only you know your son. This is just my feedback.

momstravel - you better not take your son to see Book of Mormon either because that would probably make him really uncomfortable

I haven't seen it either, but my friends who did say that Book of Mormon is one of the dirtiest shows they've ever seen, and it is indeed hilarious!
