Three free hours before our Appt. at The Met

Chaperoning a day trip to the Met. Friday Dec.4. with five high school students. We'll have 3 hours (9:00 a.m.-12:00a.m.) to wander before our appointment at the Met. Any suggestions on what we might fit into those three hours- within walking distance?

Perhaps a walk through Central Park near the Met?

North (uptown) of The Met is the Museum of the City of New York as well as The Guggenheim. That part of 5th Ave is known as Museum Mile.

What kind of "appointment" do you have at the Met?

Thanks for the suggestions so far! School groups viewing the museum without a guided tour are assigned a time for arrival. Must help with crowd control.

We will be dropped off at Rockefeller Center.

Well if the kids haven't been to NYC before and you're being dropped off at Rock Ctr., you might want to have a tour of Rock Ctr. and/or go up to Top of the Rock for the views. You could walk Fifth ave. and see some of the Xmas windows. Saks Fifth ave. is across from Rock Ctr. If you head south (street numbers get smaller) you could go to Bryant Park (42 st. & Fifth) behind the main library where there's a skating rink and Xmas market. A few blocks south of there is Lord & Taylor with lovely Xmas windows (38-39 st.) Grand Central terminal is not far and also has a Xmas market and is quite grand to see. ;)

While in Bryant Park you could take you people to the library. You could take them on a subway and bus ride to the Met from Grand Central.

You could ask them to work together and figure out a route of things they want to do.

Why not go over to the newly reopened NY HIstorical Society.

BTW I do not think 6 people is what museums are thinking of when they say "school groups" You can just walk in. School groups are large groups -usually a class or two!
